e-Ink Holdings Poised for Large Growth in the Second-Half of 2012

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 04:57 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-46649 aligncenter" title="e-ink-holdings" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/47253_0162100.712.8712SL1H_2012資料照片_copy1.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="316" />

e-Ink Holdings is poised to engage in rapid growth in Q3 and Q4 of 2012. The company has had a fairly lackluster year so far, with no major e-readers being shipped, other then the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight. With new devices imminently being released by Sony, Amazon and Kobo, the rest of the year looks quite bright.

e-Ink is responsible for providing the display screens on 75% of all the major e-readers on the market. The company recently purchased a controlling interest in SiPix Technology Inc. They intend on purchasing the entire company by the end of the year and the main reason is the companies patents.

According to the Taipei Times e-Ink reported that The company yesterday released its second-quarter results, showing a net loss of NT8 million (US.2 million) in the quarter, or a net loss per share of NT.76, which was larger than its net loss of NT7 million, or a net loss per share of NT.73, in the first quarter. On a yearly basis, E Ink reported a net profit of NT.33 billion, or earnings per share of NT.22, the company's data showed. Consolidated revenue was NT.48 billion last quarter, up 17 percent sequentially, but down 35.35 percent from NT.93 billion a year earlier. Gross margin dropped to 0.6 percent from 1.1 percent in the first quarter and 32.5 percent a year ago, the data showed.

To improve profitability, going forward E Ink will focus on applications other than e-books in the future, chairman Scott Liu said, adding that demand from e-tags for convenience stores and supermarkets would explode next year, which would help to drive up growth.

So what has happened this year for the company? Well the Kobo Touch entering the Japanese market accounted for almost 100,000 shipped units. The Nook Simple Touch with Glow, also used e-ink Pearl Units.

This year has been one of the quietest on record, with no major company unveiling any new products. This will change going forward with the new Sony PRS-T2 to be released within the next month and new e-readers by Amazon are expected by October. Kobo intends on releasing a new Tablet PC but there is no word yet if they are expanding upon their dedicated e-reader lineup. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

MetroPCS lights up Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, starts selling LG Connect 4G

MetroPCS lights up Voice over LTE VoLTE services, starts selling LG Connect 4G

MetroPCS may not be grand in scale, but it’s certainly not lacking for ambition. Just over a year after announcing its eventual transition to Voice over LTE, the carrier has officially launched its VoLTE services. Moreover, it’s announcing the first sale of a VoLTE-capable handset at one of the company’s Dallas / Fort Worth store locations. The Android-powered LG Connect 4G is the outfit’s first (and only, for now) VoLTE-capable phone, but the operator’s promising more rollouts and phone options “in the coming weeks.” For the consumer, those in range of LTE signals should notice clearer calls, and it’s become something of a trend to see carriers (Verizon and Sprint, for instance) moving in this direction as 2G / 3G networks start to show their age. So, DFW residents — anyone been able to try it out? Let us know in comments below.

What project should I do today?

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 03:51 PM PDT

Chris and I were kicking around a few ideas on excuses to get out of the office and work on some interesting projects while we're at it. I've personally gotten quite a few emails for some cool projects, so we decided to kill two birds with one stone.

As a huge fan of The Ben Heck Show, as well as Ladyada's Ask an Engineer, I thought some kind of interactive weekly Youtube show might be a fun experiment that could also get some local Boston makers involved as well. It also solves the ,000,000,000 question (that I wake up to most mornings):

What project should I do today?

The first idea I had is something like an Iron Chef but for electronics and hacking. There's some set of secret "ingredients" inside a mystery box, and the challenge is to come up with some kind of project we can do with what's inside.

sshot-79

A twist on this would be to pull a random project suggestion from the virtual mailbag, and then try to make things work with what's inside. So if there's a project you've been stuck on, just wanted to see built, or you just think would make a good tutorial, post to comments, twitter me @liquidware, or send me an email at justin@liquidware.com

Now it's time to think of a good title for this show…

Changing The Chinese Skyline

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 03:23 PM PDT

Over the past few years Zaha Hadid and her band of architects have been making news in China. With their Guangzhou Opera House bagging many accolades and awards this year, we thought about recapturing for you in one page, how she is managing to change China's skyline. There could be many political inferences we can draw from the sudden spate of modernizations in China. But for the sake of our interest in design, we stick only to admiring the beauty and integrity of theses 5 magnificent projects.

Sky SOHO in Shanghai

The Sky SOHO is an office and retail destination housed in close quarters to Hongqiao Transportation Hub and Shanghai's city centre. The Hongqiao Airport is in close quarters as well. The structure consolidates three thematic courtyards and reflects distinct cluster of activities.

Wangjing SOHO in Beijing

Guangzhou Opera House in Guangzhou

The 70,000 sqm Opera House in Guangzhou is a building, which can seat 1,800 guests in the Grand theatre. The entrance lobby and lounge, Multifunction hall, other auxiliary facilities and support premisesconfirms that this city as one of Asia's cultural centers in the making.

New Century City Art Centre in Chengdu

The New Century City Art Centre is slated to become the new cultural destination for the Sichuan Provence. The Centre is foretold to become an unprecedented collection of world-class arts, performances and leisure venues. The NCCAC is also said to become the regional arts and music center. Federal appeals court says warrantless wiretapping is legal

Federal appeals court says warrantless wiretapping is legal

A federal appeals court has ruled today that the US government can tap into Americans’ communications without worrying over frivolous things like “being sued” by its people. In what most sane civilians will probably see as a depressing loss of protection, a three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that citizens can sue the United States for damages stemming from the use of information collected via wiretap, but not for the collection of information itself. In typical pass-the-buck fashion, Wired reports that Judge Michael Daly Hawkins and Judge Harry Pregerson added the following: “Although such a structure may seem anomalous and even unfair, the policy judgment is one for Congress, not the courts.” Alrighty. For those unaware, the back and forth surrounding this issue extends back to Congress’ authorization of the Bush spy program in 2008, and more specifically, a pair of US lawyers and the now-defunct al-Haramain Islamic Foundation — a group that was granted over .5 million combined in legal fees after proving that they were spied on sans warrants. The full report can be found in the PDF below.

Glowing Gardens

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 01:47 PM PDT

I’m not a huge fan of terrariums or clustered pendant lamps on their own, but combine the two ideas and I’m on board! The 38 Series was developed from a technique where glass spheres are blown and then a multitude of cavities are introduced into them, intentionally intersecting and colliding within the sphere. Some of the cavities serve as planters with soil and others house lighting for a one-of-a-kind garden/light hybrid.

Microsoft Surface 2 Under Development

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 12:11 PM PDT

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter wp-image-46638" title="OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Surface-with-keyboard.jpg" alt="" width="691" height="472" />

Neither the Surface tablet or the Windows 8 version it would run has hit ground though Microsoft is reported to be already into developing the next gen version of it. All of this stems from an ad it recently put up which essentially aims at building a complete design and development team dedicated to the Surface range. This should be seen as a positive development as it shows how committed Microsoft really is with the Surface. It clearly does not wish to stop at the Surface and wishes to upgrade it periodically while also coming up with sequels to it from time to time.

The Ad goes like this: /> “The Surface Team focuses on lighting up Microsoft experiences with touch first computing. A fundamental part of our strategy is having desirable and powerful devices that enable the experiences people want, and elicit their excitement. Creating these devices involves a close partnership between hardware and software engineers, designers, and manufacturing. We are currently building the next generation and Surface needs you!”

Apple replaces its iPad range every year with a more advanced unit while the myraid other tablet makers also follow a similar upgrade pattern. Needless to say, Microsoft would have lost out in the long run if it fails to do the same with the Surface as well even if the first gen devices make a solid start.

On offer are various posts that include mechanical engineers, component specialists, materials experts along with driver developers and audio engineers. Also required are manufacturing and packaging designers that will add to the comprehensive team now already engaged with the Surface.

Microsoft is trying to present a device that is touch based and is able to explore the full potential of Windows 8. The Richmond based company has also set itself quite ambitious goals with the Surface 2 and is open to exploring new materials such as metals, ceramics, plastics and thin films” as well as “finishing processes such as paint, plating and PVD” for the new tablet.

Even more interesting is the mention of advanced and innovative design ideas such as alternative power sources. What that eventually means is anybody’s guess right now though fuel cells to some completely new battery type to add more punch to the Surface 2′s power credentials cannot be ruled out.

Microsoft had launched the Surface in June, a move that had taken everyone by surprise. That also included its traditional hardware partners. None of the companies were provided with any prior information and none had ever suspected the software behemoth would also compete with them on the hardware front. Acer was informed though it wasn’t elaborate and also on short notice.

All of it has led to a strange scenario, something borne out by what Acer spokesman Henry Wang who said, “On one hand Microsoft is our partner, but on the other, Microsoft's move makes them compete not only with us but all PC makers.” Wang also went on to say, “We think that Microsoft's launch of its own-brand products is negative for the whole PC industry.”

Google's Olympic doodles get interactive with buttonmashing hurdles

Google has already churned out quite a few of its trademark doodles for the Olympics, but it’s upped its game considerably today for its depiction of the hurdles. Pressing that red play button on the search engine’s front page will let you test your Track & Field skills (and your keyboard’s sturdiness) in an interactive event — one where you can, naturally, also share your results on Google+ when you’re finished. Hit the source link below to give it a go yourself.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Available as eBooks

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 10:37 AM PDT

src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/chicken-soup-for-the-soul.jpg" alt="" title="chicken-soup-for-the-soul" width="286" height="475" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46629" /> /> Open Road Integrated Media has partnered with the publishers of the widely successful Chicken Soup for the Soul series to digitize the popular essay books. Forty of the first 160 books in the series will be released today.

“The Chicken Soup for the Soul series is perfectly suited to our milestone marketing campaigns. Open Road is delighted to be the digital publisher for much of this beloved series, and we are eager to connect these titles with readers of all ages," said Jane Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Open Road, in a press release.

One of the aspects of the "Chicken Soup" series that has made it so popular is the reader-created content each book contains. While the essays themselves can serve as inspiration to the readers, the series grew in readership as one of the only bestselling titles that the readers themselves submitted stories to.

"Open Road's deep knowledge of digital publishing and marketing made this an easy choice for us," said Bill Rouhana, CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul. "With the name recognition and fan base already behind Chicken Soup for the Soul we are looking forward to bringing the Chicken Soup for the Soul message to millions of additional people through our ebook partnership with them."

The "Chicken Soup" series lends itself well to ebook format as readers can read the short essays when they find themselves with a few minutes to spare,  a habit that is much for convenient on an e-reader, tablet, or smartphone. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;
