Geometrik LCD watch is both artistic and cryptic.

Posted: 05 Aug 2012 07:05 PM PDT

Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.

Lloyd says: "Geometrik" is an LCD concept watch that displays the time and date in a cryptic and artistic way.

As you can see in the images below, the digits' outlines are formed by overlapping squares and rectangles.

Geometrik is USB rechargeable via a computer, and has an alarm. The watch's case and strap are made from stainless steel and are available in silver or black. They are also etched with the same geometric patterns as used in the display. The display is available in different colours and is "always on".

This design would appeal to anyone who likes cool modern gadgets, puzzles, art, creativity, thinking "outside the box" and having fun.

It stands out because of its unique and easy to read cryptic display.

Geometrik LCD watch is both artistic and cryptic., 4.2 out of 5 based on 11 ratings

Breaking: RIM has pulled the Plug on the Playbook OS 2.0.1.668 Update

Posted: 05 Aug 2012 03:17 AM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-46535 aligncenter" title="playbook-2.0.1.668-update-pulled" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/playbook-os-update1-602x449.jpg" alt="" width="602" height="387" />

If you were hoping to download the latest update for the Blackberry Playbook that gives it the same functionality as the new Playbook 2, prepare to be let down. We have breaking news that Research and Motion has pulled the update from being pushed out to people who have yet to upgrade to the latest RIM 2.0.1.668 update.

There is no official word from RIM in regards to them pulling the update. Since it launched, there has been a ton of problems from users who sideloaded their own Android apps. In some cases apps are disappearing from the homescreen and suddenly stop working. The fix right now is to simply delete the app and reinstall it. This might cause some problems if you have saved games, because they too will disappear. Other problems resulted in some Playbook WIFI tablets unable to boot up the upgrade.

The majority of users who installed the latest firmware update had overwhelming positive things to say about it. In many cases web browsing is quicker, it boots up faster and has a added functionality for BAR files. It also gives you better access to wireless networks better in the home with enhanced upgrades.

When the Playbook OS 2.0.1.668 update rolled out a few days ago, many people cheered. It seems that the date on the upgrade was from June 16th, which should have given the company ample time to test everything internally. Now everyone is collectively moaning in despair that they did not get the update in time. There is no current option to downgrade your operating system unless you get an image from one that has not been upgraded  yet. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

New Orleans Watch Company

Posted: 05 Aug 2012 01:42 AM PDT

Say hello to another independent American watch brand. This time from raging New Orleans. Sounds like a place with enough history to support a watch brand. The marque is simply called the New Orleans Watch Company – and the pieces have a distinct feel to them that is both decorative and celebratory – a lot like New Orleans I suppose.

The watches don’t seem to have model names. What I gather is that each is made to order per the customer’s wishes. That equals expensive. The pieces have a very artisan feel to them versus being made in sophisticated CNC machines and alike. Seen in this article are a few versions of the New Orleans Watch – you can see how the parts can be mixed up with various materials. I don’t actually know the case size of the pieces either.

The cases look like parts from old furniture. Actually a lot of the watches are seemingly made from old furniture. For instance, according to the brand, there is ivory in some of the pieces on the dial – which was recovered from an old piano that was found during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The watches are said to have a nautical theme. I sort of see that. The actual watch dial is off-centered. They are cool with a very “antique” look to them. On each dial is an 18k gold fleur de lis symbol.

Each of the cases has separate lug structures. These are decorated on many of the models and add a very unique look to the watch. You can see how New Orleans Watch Company also plays with different hands and other dial elements. There is an exposed balance wheel from the mechanical movement on the dial as well.

Who is behind all this? A guy named Craig von Babylon (really, “from Babylon?”) who is also the president of Couronne Jewels and Watches – a retailer in New Orleans. All the movements are Swiss, with New Orleans Watch Company sourcing movements from Soprod. Specifically, the movements are the A10-2 automatics (these have the exposed balance wheels on them). So say hello again to a bit more watch love from right here in the US of A (with Swiss guts).

Good e-Reader Week in Review

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 08:57 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-46528 aligncenter" title="good-ereader-week-in-review" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/week-in-review11.png" alt="" width="720" height="239" />

During this last week many of the top six publishers released their 2nd Quarter financial results and bodes well for the eBook industry. Lots of new Android devices have been launched and there is tons of news as always! Welcome to the Good e-Reader Week in Review weekly publication, covering the essential stories you need to know about.

The Dutch eBook Industry is Rising -  eBook sales in the Netherlands are picking up and gaining momentum from the first half of 2012. Over 600,000 ebooks have been sold this year from a pool of only 16,000 titles. Industry analysts predict that the entire digital market constitutes 3% of the entire publishing segment and should increase to over 7% by the end of the year.

Overdrive Unleashes Developers Portal – Popular Digital eBook service Overdrive, mainly caters to Libraries and Schools to facilitate the borrowing of digital books. The company unveiled new developing tools aimed at companies, schools and libraries to make their own apps, using the overdrive system. This may result in Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo and other mainstream e-reading companies to develop their own apps to allow for digital lending, right on the device.

The Parallels of Erotica and Christian Fiction – Christian Fiction and Erotica have a fair bit in common. Patchen Barrs mentioned that "Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James and religious ones like Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo are achieving similar success in the ebook market. Besides death, there are two experiences universal in the human condition: sex and faith. As far back as the 14th Century households had to be wealthy to afford a single book. Often that manuscript was a prayer book with erotic pictures in the margins. They served both body and soul."

Penguin and Simon & Shuster give Quarterly Results – Over the last week Penguin has given us a sense of how the company has been performing for the first six months of 2012. Profits for the company are down almost 50% from a year ago, mostly due to the tremendous success of the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy and the Hunger Games. Both of these books contributed to the lack of sales, which fell by 4% to £441 million and has adjusted operating profit down 48% to £22 million. Book sales may be down but the company is making headway in the world of ebooks. Total sales in the first six months have increased by 1/3 and now account for nearly one in five of Penguin's total revenue. In 2009, ebooks were just 2% of Penguin's total revenues, growing to 12% last year.

Digital eBook sales at Simon & Schuster are seeing strong growth in the second financial quarter of 2012. They have risen by almost 44% and now account for 21% of the company's total book sales.  Revenues increased by 3% and garnered the company a cool 9 million from 3 million over the second quarter in 2011. Some of the ebooks that saw the most sales during this period were The Wind Through the Keyhole by Stephen King and Cowards by Glenn Beck.

Smashwords Authors dominate the New York Times Bestseller List- Does anyone still remember the arguments from only a year or so ago, the ones where critics said that digital publishing was going to destroy the book industry or where fans of ebooks promised it would be the death of paper books? Or the literary agents and publishers who firmly held the doors shut in order to keep the digitally and self-published riff raff from being confused with the "real" authors?

Apparently, no one remembers. Mark Coker, CEO of ebook distribution platform Smashwords, posted a startling announcement on the site's blog: as of yesterday, four self-published authors have a total of seven books on the New York Times' ebook fiction bestseller list.

Good e-Reader Apps Updated – The Good e-Reader Android and Playbook App Stores now see over three thousand titles being downloaded by over six million patrons worldwide. Over the last week we updated our Mobile, Tablet and Playbook Apps! We busted in new features like being able to connect via DATA only for the new Playbook 2 LTE model! We also really polished up many of the main elements to the app store, like a bigger search bar and bigger banner. Over 16 bug fixes went into these new versions and really looks solid now. If you are looking for an alternative to Amazon and Google, check out the Good e-Reader APP Store.

Blackberry Playbook 2 Launches in Canada, August 9th - The Playbook 2 is due out next week and I am very excited. Hardware wise it it has a bit faster processor and 32 GB of internal memory. The big new change is the ability to use 4G and LTE speeds, to finally give you mobility while on the go, without having to worry about Blackberry Bridge software. Its expensive though, be prepared to drop between 0 to 0 with Bell, Rogers and Telus for the unit and then factor in monthly data costs.

Browser Based Battles will cause e-Reading Fallout – New contributer t our website Sherry Snider talked about incoming browser based battles.  Apple has announced that it is pulling all support for Safari from Windows based PC’s. If  you recall Amazon, Kobo and other major companies have developed HTML5 e-Reading apps that allow you to read and buy books on any Windows PC or mobile operating system. Pulling Safari support will hinder millions of people who use it to read books via the Web. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;
