E Ink To Buy Out SiPix Technology, Acquires Majority Stake

SiPix may pride itself as the world leader in electronic paper and display innovation though from now onwards, it will have to flaunt its status from under the aegis of rival E Ink Holdings. For the AUO subsidiary has now been acquired by Taiwan based E Ink that can be considered the world’s largest supplier of electronic paper displays. As per an announcement by SiPix Technology, 82.7 percent shares of SiPix would be bought over by E Ink as the first part of the take over process. A complete buy out would take place later towards the fourth quarter of this year in a deal that is likely to be around million.

Present gadgets that we see in the market that are using displays made by e-Ink include e-book reading devices such as the Kindle, Nook and Sony Reader. SiPix Technology is also into making displays that find applications in diverse fields such as 3C labels, credit cards and such and have a production capacity of about 400,000 a month. Also, one note worthy feature of the technology used by SiPix is that their display is capable of playing back video files though at a very slow speed.

In a statement issued by E Ink Holdings chairman Scott Liu about the company’s take-over of SiPix, the chairman said: “E Ink is committed to growing the ePaper market and the purchase of SiPix shares is part of our long term growth strategy. Our goal is 'E Ink On Every Smart Surface' and we are continuing to make investments in technologies that will open new markets for our ePaper displays.”

Gameloft Titles Will Now Be Launched On Android and iOS Simultaneously

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 01:02 PM PDT

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter wp-image-46462" title="THE-DARK-KNIGHT-RISES" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/THE-DARK-KNIGHT-RISES.jpg" alt="" width="758" height="459" />

Gameloft has just made an important decision; the company aims to make simultaneous launches on both the iOS and Android platforms any new game that they develop in 2012. Gameloft even has a whole new game ready for release soon though the company is keeping its cards close to its chest for obvious reasons.

Gameloft has to its credit a number of successful gaming titles such as Dark Knight Rises, racing game Asphalt (version 7 Heat recently launched), Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, and N.O.V.A. 2: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance and is counted among the largest developers of gaming applications for the Android market. That said, the games are always made available on iOS first before anywhere else.

For Gameloft, while its priority has always been to launch the latest titles on iOS first, it has finally woken up to the immense potential that the Android platform offers. With over a million devices activated daily, Gameloft will surely appeal to a major user base once they go for simultaneous launches on both iOS and Android.

eBook Review: Trickster’s Point by William Kent Krueger

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 09:54 AM PDT

src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/WilliamKentKrueger-300x224.jpg" alt="" title="WilliamKentKrueger" width="300" height="224" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-46505" /> /> Verdict: 5 Stars

I don't really like mysteries. Basically, I just never care whodunit and even if it was the butler, I can't really figure out why he did it.

Fortunately, Krueger is such a masterful storyteller that he made me care. You can't not care, especially when a beloved political figure is lying on the ground, gasping for breath with his best friend's arrow sticking out of his chest. And there's a really complex reason why this best friend sat beside the dying man for three hours without going to get help.

As with any good suspenseful story, the reader has about twelve different options for the would-be killer and just when he thinks he knows who it is, a new name gets dragged into the unfolding plot. Krueger keeps it hidden until the very end.

Trickster's Point, the twelfth book in the NYT bestselling Cork O’Connor mysteries, incorporates a setting woven throughout with Native American history and provides a realistic insight into modern-day life on and around the reservation, complete with the good and bad. Set against a backdrop that shows some of the initiatives that have built up the Ojibwe identity alongside some of the struggles that continue to plague the people, the Native identity appears to be a living, breathing character in the story every bit as real as the key players. This phantom character may have played just as big a part in the murder as the one who drew the bow.

Trickster's Point will be available from Atria books, a division of Simon & Schuster, on August 21. Pre-orders are available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and more. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Cross Watches

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 03:33 AM PDT

Cross watches 6 Cross Watches

Years ago I think it was watch makers who made pens, and now pen makers are making watches. We all know about the incredible success of Montblanc shifting its focus to watches probably more than pens, and other brands have at lest paid attention. Italian writing instrument maker Montegrappa now has a watch collection, along with many similar companies to itself. Now Cross, another writing instrument maker, has entered the land of making timepieces. Unlike higher-end brands such as Montblanc, Cross decided to enter the market at a much lower price point. The pictures you see here aren’t of the first timepieces they ever released, but represent a brand new collection of pretty decent watches for just a few hundred bucks.

Call me a snob, but I honestly wouldn’t have discussed this collection unless I thought the designs were impressive for the price. There are lots of watches in the few hundred dollar range that don’t pass muster. Cross partnered with Solar Time Ltd. out of Hong Kong to design and produce the new collection. While the names of the pieces lack cohesion and there needs to be a marketing campaign around them, the watches and designs aren’t half bad. I got my hands on a trio of them to share with you.

Cross watches 20 Cross Watches

Cross watches 18 Cross Watches

The Cross watch collection names are a bit general. What I mean is that under each name there seems to be lots of watches. The collection names include the Gotham, New Chicago, Arial, Cambria, and Palatino. Each has a steel case with sizes between about 41-42mm wide for the men’s models. What you see before you is really just a small sampling of the many models they have. Note that the collections come with leather straps or steel bracelets.

So what do I like? Well first of all legibility is pretty good overall. Though I have to add that universally the hands are too short. Nevertheless, for the price, the dial quality and materials are good. I would put the quality up there with a brand like Skagen, which offers pretty decent stuff for around the same price. I have certainly seen watches that are much more expensive with much crappier looking dials. Sad but true. It just goes to show that a lot of the time in the watch world, what you get isn’t just about the price, but about the quality of the suppliers that the brands work with. I have seen watches that have excellent cases and dials, only to be matched with craptastic straps. Why? Simply because the brand (for whatever reason), works with a supplier that isn’t doing their best. With the Cross watches, you seem to feel like you are getting the most out of a couple of hundred bucks.

Cross watches 14 Cross Watches

The model with the white dial has a clean look to it with mostly baton hour markers. The 12 o’clock Arabic numeral is done with a brushed finish. This is a good idea because at this price a chromed hour marker would look bad. This is one example of how the designers understood the materials enough to make things look as good as possible. Another nice detail is the crown guard on the model with the metallic blue dial. Not only does the dial have more than one level, but this unique little crown guard design is an unexpected treat for the price.

Let’s look at the straps. Cross ensured that the leather straps (which have an alligator print) are fitted to the case. There is no gap from the case to the strap – just as is done in many higher-end brands. This is opposed to a strap with a straight end, and a resulting space gap between the strap and the case. Let me say it again, another nice detail to have with a price at this level.

Cross watches 9 Cross Watches

Inside each of the watches are Japanese quartz movements. Most pieces have the time with the date, but there are also time only and day/date models available. One Cross Palatino model does have a mechanical movement (also likely Japanese). Japanese quartz movements are fine and reliable for watches such as this. Like I said, there are at least two or three dozen new Cross watches for 2012. With strong designs and masculine dimensions, these are a solid value for the money and should make for a decent watch for yourself or as a gift. Prices are from about 0 – 5.

Nvidia Ordered To Supply 3 Million Tegra 3 Chips For Nexus 7

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 01:58 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46452" title="nvidia-tegra3" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/nvidia-tegra3.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="366" />

We don’t have the numbers yet to help us pin point just how hot the Nexus 7 is right now though there are some indications to help us arrive to some conclusions. Nvidia has landed up a mega contract to supply no less than 3 million of its latest Tegra 3 quad core chips to be used on the Google tablet. This is good news for Nvidia that has been struggling a bit to keep itself out of red.

Digitimes sources also point out Nvidia will see is profit jump by million from the deal. With each of the Tegra 3 chip priced at apiece, net revenue from just the Nexus 7 order would turn out to be million. Of course there are more in the pipeline for the chipmaker as more tablet makers adopt the quad core chip to power their tablet devices. We have seen Tegra 2 chip powering the majority of tablet devices launched in 2011 and something similar is already underway with the latest Tegra 4 quad core processors.

Amazon Instant Video Now Available On The iPad

Posted: 04 Aug 2012 12:24 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46459" title="Amazon-Instant-Video" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Amazon-Instant-Video.png" alt="" width="450" height="643" />

If you own an iPad and had envied Kindle Fire owners who enjoy access to the Amazon Prime store, well you are in for better times. For Amazon has now devised an app that is compatible with the iOS and will open up its Prime repertoire of videos and other content to iPad owners. This is something that is really incredible as not only the iPad with its retina display a superb device for watching videos, the Prime too has more than 120,000 videos to offer. Then there also are more than 17,000 instantly accessible movies (some being among the recently released) and TV episodes available to subscribers as well. With that much on offer, there surely will be something to suit every individual’s taste and preferences.

Also, a really nice aspect of the Amazon video app for the iPad is that even allows for offline viewing. So any purchased or rented video which shows up in the Library section of the app can be downloaded to the local memory for viewing later at user’s convenience. That’s not all since if the video is paused and such, the integrated WhisperSync technology will ensure the setting is saved in all other devices such as the Mac that is also compatible with Amazon Prime and has been logged in to the service using the same account. Unfortunately, Apple’s other immensely popular devices such as the iPhone or the iPod cannot be counted among such devices as the app right now isn’t compatible with these. That said, the iPad with its 9.7 inch display is just the right size for watching videos on the go.

Among the other features of the Amazon video app for the iPad include Watchlist which essentially is a queue that you have made of all the movies or TV shows that you’d like to watch in the preferred order. Also, with the list being in the cloud, one can always make changes to it from any other device.

However, the Amazon Instant Video app will not allow to buy or rent directly from the app itself as this would entail giving away 30 percent of the transacted amount to Apple. Users won’t even be able to browse the videos that are available. Instead, all of those has to be done directly from a browser, be it from the tablet device itself or any other computing platform such as a laptop.

Amazon Prime is available on a per year contract. Till now the service was only exclusive to owners of its Kindle Fire though tapping the huge iPad consumer base does make a lot of business sense that Amazon will surely not want to let go of.

All in all, the Amazon Instant Video app provides for a nice new way to watch videos and shows from the iPad. The move to offer Amazon Prime services on the iPad also shows just how keen Amazon is to see its content business grow really big. The likes of Netflix, Hulu Plus or Apple’s own iTunes and such just have a new competitor with the iPad being their new battle ground.
