eBooks Now Account for 21% of all Sales at Simon & Schuster

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 04:30 PM PDT

class="size-large wp-image-46481 aligncenter" title="Simon & Schuster Logo" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/0564d4ec4885448fc55b26b11c1ae743-1024x298.png" alt="" width="600" height="174" />

Digital eBook sales at Simon & Schuster are seeing strong growth in the second financial quarter of 2012. They have risen by almost 44% and now account for 21% of the companies total book sales.  Revenues increased by 3% and garnered the company a cool 9 million from 3 million over the second quarter in 2011. Some of the eBooks that saw the most sales during this period were The Wind Through the Keyhole by Stephen King and Cowards by Glenn Beck.

Publishing companies are seeing a massive influx in digital revenue in 2012. Penguin reported on Monday that profits for the company are down almost 50% from a year ago, mostly due to the tremendous success of the 50 Shades of Grey Trilogy and the Hunger Games. Both of these books contributed to the lack of sales, which fell by 4% to £441 million and has adjusted operating profit down 48% to £22 million. Total sales in the first six months have increased by 1/3 and now account for nearly one in five of Penguin's total revenue. In 2009, ebooks were just 2% of Penguin's total sales, growing to 12% last year. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Mouth Tools

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 02:55 PM PDT

The Mouth Factory project implements remind of the horror dentistry tools of yesteryears. However, looking deeper into the concept you realize that these series of functional machines specifically designed to be operated by the mouth of the user, can be developed or used as research for tools that people with limited mobility can use. However the designer explains his project as thus, "project explores the capabilities and versatility of the mouth and correlating facial expressions, re-contextualized within the realm of production."

The project includes Chewing drill, teeth lathe, tongue extruder, mouth breath rotational molding and vacuum form machines. By focusing on the mouth, the production devices acquire a quality that amplifies and render visible the reciprocal relationship and effects between our body and our tools.

Beasty Beauty In The Snow

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 01:19 PM PDT

Its peak summer in some countries so hopefully Michal Bonikowski's Snowmobile concept will bring you some respite! In any case it's awesome to see some diverse talents in Michal, who is famous for his Facebook Phones on YD. The mission with this snowmobile is pure personal pleasure; something that is a perfect marriage of excellent handling, all-terrain-vehicle and a closed cabin for the driver.

Sporting an efficient electric drive it will easily take us up the slope (even the ones hardly accessible) or to work by a snowy road forgotten by civilization.

Iconic Rubbish Bin

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:46 AM PDT

I love the idea behind the GO Recycle bin. Most countries follow a color-coded system for sorting the trash. However sometimes you can get confused, despite pictures and explanations on the bin. So what better way than explicitly fashioning the bin lid to let you know what goes where. As the designers put it, "intending to revolutionize the recycling industry and make it consumer-friendly, the idea of the GO bin is make recycling fun and convenience."

The Apple iPad is Leading the Charge in Tablet Sales

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:12 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46350" title="ipad3" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/ipad32.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="317" />

The tablet segment has seen robust growth in the second quarter and guess what contributed to the success story the most? Well, its Apple of course which led the sales out of all the different tablets on the market. To put it in sheer numbers, a total of about 25 million tablet devices found buyers in the second quarter of 2012, reports IDC which marked an increase of 33.6% increase over the 18.7 million tablet devices sold in Q1 2012. The increase in tablet sales is even more impressive when compared with the corresponding figure for the same period a year ago when 15 million tablet PCs got sold, leading to a growth of 66.67%.

Now coming to Apple’s contribution to the about 25 million tablet PCs sold in Q2 2012, the iPad alone made up for 17 million tablet devices which is clearly more than all other tablet devices available in the market. This again is am impressive improvement over the 11.8 million iPads sold in Q1 2012.

“Apple built upon its strong March iPad launch and ended the quarter with its best-ever shipment total for the iPad, outrunning even the impressive shipment record it set in the fourth quarter of last year,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices. “The vast majority of consumers continue to favor the iPad over competitors, and Apple is seeing increasingly strong interest in the device from vertical markets—especially education. While iPad shipment totals are beginning to slow a bit in mature markets where the device saw early traction, growth in other regions is clearly more than making up the difference.”

However, while Apple has emerged head and shoulders above all other players in the segment, other too haven’t been left out of the fun entirely. For instance, Samsung too recorded impressive sales with 2.4 million units shipped during the period, which in turn is over hundred percent increase over the 1.1 million units sold a year ago. Amazon too chipped in with shipment of 1.2 million units of the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire was launched towards the end of 2011 and is already due for a replacement soon. However, these were the only players to have breached the million sales figure mark though the other tablet that too has notched up significant sales is the Nexus 7. There are no sales figures available though of the Nexus 7 as the Google tablet went on sale during the Q3 period.

As for the future, IDC expects things to remain competitive in the tablet sphere during the second half of 2012 what with products such as MS Surface or the Kindle Fire 2 all set to be unleashed during this period. A mini iPad too can be ruled out and if it is indeed released, expect it to create the same sort of frenzy as its bigger cousin should have now become used to by now.

“If anything, there’s a real risk that people will have too many options from which to choose this holiday season. Consumers baffled by the differences between Amazon and Google versions of Android, or Windows 8 and Windows RT, may well default to market leader Apple. Or they may simply choose to remain on the sideline for another cycle,” said said Bob O’Donnell, program vice president, Clients and Displays.

Boegli Grand Opera Limited Edition Watch

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 08:38 AM PDT

Boegli M.900 Opera Boegli Grand Opera Limited Edition Watch

Minute repeater watches sound the time back to you in a little song. Music box watches just play little songs. Each of these watches are nice in their own regard, but if you want to get a musically capable watch that is somewhat budget friendly (relatively speaking) then, a music box watch is the way to go. Music box watches are also comparatively much more rare, making the availability of a minute repeater seem much more easily obtainable by comparison.

Swiss-based Boegli specializes in “musical watches”. Each of the wrist and pocket watches that they produce contain traditional drum and pin music players. This new Grand Opera watch is their first ever round wrist watch. Their previous watches were only available in squarish rectangular cases. In addition to the new shape (which looks a lot more wearable than the angular models), the Grand Opera has a handy feature which allows you to start and stop the music playing (at will) by using a pusher. Presumably, past models just let the spring wind out allowing the music to run until the power ceased.

boegli opera watch Boegli Grand Opera Limited Edition Watch

By the way, one of the other Boegli watches collections was titled the “Classic Rock.” Much to my chagrin, actual classic rock was not what the watch played. So why name it that? Anyhow… The Grand Opera watch case is 47mm wide in steel, but is rose gold plated. I haven’t heard of a lot of gold-plated watches lately. The case has a sapphire crystal and decent look to it. On the case is a crown connected to the watch movement at 9 o’clock, and a crown to wind the mainspring for the music box at 3 o’clock. The pusher to activate the music is at about 4 o’clock. One thing that this new Boegli watch does well is properly mix the dial between music and time functions. While small, the off-centered time display (with date) is still legible and prominent. A view to the drum and pins for the music player is located on the dial as well. The case of the watch is overall modeled after a watch movement with blued screws and some Geneva stripe polishing.

Inside the watch is an ETA 2671 automatic movement. This is a small diameter automatic which allows enough space for the traditional music box components. Resonance is an issue in watches like this but the drum and pin set up can be remarkably loud, so I expect that the Boegli Grand Opera has a nice sound to it. The 17 note system plays a melody from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. I think something from Led Zeppelin would be cool as well. Boegli will produce only 99 pieces of the Grand Opera watch, which comes with a relatively sober price tag of 3,800-4,200 Swiss Francs.

3 Useful Things to Know about the BeagleJuice, 2nd Gen

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 07:29 AM PDT

I got a few very good questions about the BeagleJuice, 2nd Gen from earlier this week, so I thought I'd answer them in post form.

What are the specs on the I2C pins on the BeagleJuice?

The I2C pins (GND, Vext, SDA, and SCL) are exposed for custom headers or wiring. After bugging Chris several times, he decided to just draw me a schematic instead. The range of operation is 1.8V to 3.3V. Currently, there are drivers coded for Android/Linux and OMAP, but it could be hacked to anything that talks I2C.

BeagleJuice2 I2C Diagram

What else can I power with the BeagleJuice?

The BeagleJuice comes standard with the 2.1mm barrel plug, which works just fine with the 5V barrel jacks on the Arduino, BeagleBoard C5 and xM, PandaBoard, as well as the BeagleBone.

image

That said, it is in fact just a 2-pin molex connector at the end, so Matt spliced up his own USB micro cable, put some heat-shrink on the tip, and voila! The BeagleJuice now charges anything that takes 5V – my phone, or even the Raspberry Pi (when mine finally arrives!).

What's with the strips of LEDs?

Aside from the fact that LEDs are always fun, they actually serve a purpose.

image

The ones on the left are battery charge status indicators, which were inspired by Chris' Macbook Pro battery meter. (Sorry the picture is a little blurry – I tried to catch it as the lights were moving up!)

imageimage

There are a couple more "easter eggs" on the BeagleJuice, 2nd Gen – mostly holdovers from things Chris, Mike and I were working on here at the lab. Post your thoughts or guesses to the comments, or just send me a note – justin dot huynh at liquidware dot com
