The Intuitive Extinguisher

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 05:45 PM PDT

The Easy Trigger hopes to make your experience with a fire extinguisher less frightful and more intuitive. The thing is, different people have different ways to react during emergencies. Some are calm and collected and will follow instructions and pull out the pin correctly from the conventional extinguishers. Others may panic and fumble. In order to ensure smooth operations, the Easy Trigger was designed.

Intuitive and easy to use, this project is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Give the gift of eBooks with Google Play Giftcards

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 04:08 PM PDT

Google Play has finally released Giftcards that will allow customers to purchase them in retail environments and use them to purchase apps, games and eBooks. They will be available at Target, Radio Shack, and Gamestop within the next few weeks. There are only three tiers of denominations currently – , and . Right now this is a USA exclusive, with no word of an international roll-out.

One of the tremendous benefits of the Google Play Giftcards is that you will be able to use them to buy eBooks from Google eBooks. This is something that would really spark an interest for the avid reader and might make a great gift. Normally after the initial launch retailers often give severely discounted giftcards to stimulate sales. Case and point, Walmart offers 0 iTunes cards for only , which gives you at least two free eBooks.

Many younger users do not have credit cards, which makes purchasing apps a daunting task. This is one of the primarily reasons why Android apps are pirated to such a high degree. Now that people have an alternative to a credit card, hopefully piracy will be decreased because people will no longer have an excuse. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

The Koeda Effect

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 02:36 PM PDT

Mixer tap designs are typical and stereotyped and we are basically programmed to use them in a particular way. More like up and down is on and off, and turning the mixer from left to right will change from hot to cold. Not that this is a bad thing, but imagine a redefined shape, a new intuitive adoption of operations…we have done that in the tech world, can we do that in Bathroom Innovations?

As the designer explains, "designed to be unconsciously intuitive, Koeda features a modified progressive cartridge that provides a simplified innate dial control. By rotating the dial in a clockwise motion, water temperature gradually changes from cold to hot. Water pressure flow will progressively increase as the dial is rotated further – ensuring users are less likely to accidentally turn up water flow and waste excess water."

  • Koeda is handcrafted in porcelain and finished with a flawless glaze.
  • An aerator manages the directional flow of the water and also softens the water's texture for a silky, gentle wash.
  • A slight bump angled at a 15° incline minimizes excess splashing.
  • An innovative series of six LED lights, efficiently powered by two lithium cells, change from a light sky blue to a warm orange and finally to a dark searing red, indicating the mix of cold and hot water.

Google officially announces Google Play gift cards, now rolling out to Target, Radio Shack and GameStop

We’ve seen hints of them in the Google Play app and some pretty clear evidence of them in the wild, and now Google has finally officially announced the availability of Google Play gift cards. Those are available in , and denominations, and will be rolling out to Target, RadioShack and GameStop retail stores in the United States over the next few weeks (no word on availability outside the US just yet). According to Google, they’ll also be available on Walmart.com later this month, but not in Walmart stores for the time being. As you’d expect, the cards can be used to purchase anything on Google Play, including movies, music and books in addition to apps (or in-app items).

Twist and Clean

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 11:25 AM PDT

The Hula Washer promises to keep you fit and svelte as you wash your clothes. Not only do you save time and money, but the concept also keeps your waistline under control. The energy you use to spin the Hula Washer, like a Hula Hoop is used to clean the clothes loaded into the washer segment. Add clothes and washing liquid to the hollow centre of the ring and then start to spin. The only thing problem I see it that it looks convenient for small clothes like socks and hankies, nothing more.

Hula is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab Entry.

New Bestseller List Gives More Accurate Data

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 09:49 AM PDT

class="size-medium wp-image-47345" title="bestseller-display-533x400" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/bestseller-display-533x4002-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" />

Success stories of indie authors and self-published authors making the major bestseller lists are becoming more and more commonplace, especially in this climate of digital reading and an appreciation for the DIY authors. But Digital Book World has been at work on a more accurate picture of how books are selling, since the typical lower priced indie ebook may sell more copies but actually make less money than a higher priced, traditionally published book.

Laura Hazard Owen of paidContent.org examined how this new bestseller list is compiled, as well as what the data means for the industry.

The data collection procedure was determined by Dan Lubart of Iobyte Solutions, Bowker Market Research VP Kelly Gallagher, Mike Shatzkin of the Idea Logical Company, Writers' House president Simon Lipskar, and Book Industry Study Group executive director Len Vlahos. While the intent of this new list, which uses sales figures from several major ebook retailers—including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Google, and Sony—is to prevent a one-day spike in book sales resulting from a daily deal or special one-day pricing from artificially driving a book onto an existing national bestseller list, it should be noted that all of the participants in the development of this list are tireless champions for ebooks and digital publishing. This should not be viewed as an attempt by the publishing industry to discredit the bestseller status of some ebooks, but rather to help consumers know that books appearing on the list are genuinely deserving of those spots based on accurate sales figures.

Hazard Owen spoke with the head of Digital Book World's parent company about the need for this type of data and the credibility it lends to ebooks:

"It is incredibly important for the fast emerging ebook marketplace to have clear, valid and authenticated data about both the dollar volume and unit volume of best sellers," said David Nussbaum, chairman and CEO of Digital Book World's parent company, publisher F+W Media. "Because it is still a very young business, the entire channel — authors, agents, publishers, and consumers — need clear and focused information about best sellers." />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

iPad Mini Slated For October Release

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 08:15 AM PDT

style="text-align: center;"> class="aligncenter wp-image-47339" title="iPad Mini" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/iPad-Mini.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="342" />

The 7 inch tablet segment has been making a lot of noise of late, enough for Apple to field a competitor of its own in the form of a mini iPad. Also, a smaller sized iPad had been in the news for quite some time now and it seems all of that is set to culminate into a real device . There also is news from upstream component makers that point out supply volumes could top 4 million units per month starting September which will ensure there are enough to allow for a smooth launch which is expected to happen in October. Also, with that much of the 7.85 sized tablet produced every month, there should be enough to satiate the holiday buying frenzy as well, reports Digitimes.

As for the device itself, the smaller iPad will come with a 7.85 inch sized display which will have the same resolution as that of the second gen iPad. While that may not make for enough pixels to be called retina display, it will still rank right up there with the likes of the Nexus 7 or the new breed of 7 inchers coming along. Also, initial rumors point out the smaller iPad will sport a much thinner bezel along the sides which will ensure the device measure compact dimensions even when packing in a bigger display.

However, Apple might not be seen playing the price card with its mini iPad as its likely to be priced around the 9 mark. This will be twice that of the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire, the biggest names in the segment that had relied on a low initial cost to garner market share.

StarCraft II pro gamer Stephano to sign with Evil Geniuses

Recent North American StarLeague Season 3 Champion Ilyes Satouri to leave French-based team Millenium on September 1.

StarCraft II player Ilyes "Stephano" Satouri, North American Star League Season 3 Champion and the most consistent non-Korean player of 2012 thus far, will have his current contract to the French-based team Millenium come to an end on September 1. Rumors have swirled on what Stephano's next move would be, with several teams–including his current one–making bids on the 19-year old Frenchman.

Stephano will be playing StarCraft II with Evil Geniuses soon.

Millenium eSports Manager Jean-Marc "Bjoran" Gaudin has confirmed with GameSpot that Stephano has declined the team's offer, and will not be re-signing. Sources close to the situation tell GameSpot that Stephano will sign with Evil Geniuses, which was said to have made the most lucrative offer among the professional teams, with Millenium close behind. One team executive said it's "pretty much a done deal with Evil Geniuses".

Stephano will play his last event for Millenium at this weekend's Major League Gaming Summer Championships in Raleigh, North Carolina as the top-seeded Non-Korean player at the event. He has been with Millenium for the past four years, playing the majority of his Warcraft III and the entirety of his StarCraft II career with the team.

Last year, Stephano took part in a controversial new team signing that never happened. After signing a new contract and agreeing to terms with team Complexity, he changed his mind and went back to Millenium the very next day. After days of contract disputes from both teams, a settlement was reached, mediated by Evil Geniuses owner, Alex Garfield, stating that Stephano would stay with Millenium but would be penalized with a significant undisclosed fine.

The move would mark the third new and second marquee StarCraft II signing for Evil Geniuses in 2012, following the additions of Swedish star Marcus "ThorZaIN" Eklöf, and American upstart Conan "Suppy" Liu. Millenium will be making an official announcement shortly.

Phosphor Touch Time Watch On Kickstarter + Interview

Posted: 21 Aug 2012 05:03 AM PDT

Touch Time 5 shot Phosphor Touch Time Watch On Kickstarter + Interview

If you are in need of any additional proof that Kickstarter is a great place to fund the development of a new watch, look no further than the Touch Time project from California based Phosphor Watches. Phosphor is well known for their innovative digital watches which often feature E Ink (e-Ink) displays and have a sense of eye-catching charm. On August 6th, 2012 Donald Brewer and the team at Phosphor launched a Kickstarter project for their newest design, dubbed “Touch Time”. Within 24 hours they had reached their ,000 goal and, as of the time of posting, they have over 1000 backers and well over 5,000 in funding. Perhaps this is not surprising given the success of other watch projects such as the Pebble. Nevertheless it is further evidence that the Kickstarter crowd really loves watches.

The Touch Time is a digital watch that offers a series of features including an alarm, stopwatch, reminders, world time, calendar, calculator and moon-phase which are all controlled via a touch screen interface. Unlike other recent and very popular Kickstarter projects, Touch Time is not a “Smart watch” as it does not connect to your smartphone, nor does it need to be consistently recharged as power is sourced by a conventional lithium cell battery.

Touch Time is built into a conventional and minimalist watch design with a 34mm wide stainless steel case which is a little less than 11mm thick. Backers (the name for people who fund projects on Kickstarter) are able to choose from a series of colorful straps or even stainless steel bracelet options to suit their tastes. The Touch Time has no conventional buttons, instead opting for a capacitive touch interface used in conjunction with its 144 x 168 “always on” LCD display (with back light).

Donald Brewer (Founder and President of Phosphor Watches) was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about the Touch Time:

aBtR: Can you give us some background on the Touch Time project? What led to this design? What needs consumer does this new model fill?
DB: The majority of the estimated B of digital watches sold today look about the same and use the same technology as they did in 1983. If there was ever a reason why folks often say that watch category is declining, it is due to the fact that it isn’t keeping up with consumer electronics like smartphones and tablets. I believe that thanks to touchscreens and high resolution displays, in the next few years we can see a major update on what a digital watch is and what technologies they use, and overall make for an improved watch. No one has a cellphone from the mid-1980s, why then do we use digital watches of that era?

aBtR: Phosphor is a successful brand with a wide product lineup, why use Kickstarter for the Touch Time project?
DB: Phosphor is still a small, but growing brand. Being able to fund the project on Kickstarter is great way for a company like ours to bring to market a pretty challenging product to develop, but one that I think the market has been waiting for.

aBtR: What makes the Touch Time different than one of Phosphor’s other watches, or from a conventional digital watch?
DB: It is an update on what a digital watch should be. Although Phosphor has other innovative products, this one is specifically targeted at the large audience of current digital watch buyers.

aBtR: Do you think the Touch Time will appeal to people who generally dismiss digital watches and, if so, why?
DB: I think so. I think it [Touch Time] is what a digital watch should be as it provides more information and functionality that is far easier to use with the capacitive touchscreen interface than current digital watches which are difficult to use and have minimal functionality.

96cb654dac7d98c84fec11f9fd940c38 large Phosphor Touch Time Watch On Kickstarter + Interview

aBtR: Why not make a “Smartwatch” like so many other brands on Kickstarter?
DB: The current digital watch market is about billion annually, and the current Smartwatch market is much, much smaller. I think that use of touchscreen and high resolution displays can represent a major disruption to conventional digital watch markets. In addition, all of the Smartwatches in the market today have battery life of 5-7 days. Having done very early Smartwatches with Microsoft SPOT and PALM many years ago, I am convinced that the majority of consumers don’t want a rechargeable watch to use everyday. We have a enough products in our life that we have to worry about recharging, a watch shouldn’t be one of them. Touch Time has a battery life of more than one year.

aBtR: What is your favorite feature or capability of the Touch Time?
DB: To be honest, the simple-to-use touch interface makes all of the features better. To be able to set an Alarm, Time, and a Reminder with a few swipes on a scroll wheel, versus a typical digital watch where you’d have to read a manual, is simply the way it should be. Of course to also be able to change to different dial faces with a swipe of a finger is one of the most compelling features.

aBtR: Many readers will know Phosphor for its use of E INK displays on models like the World Timer, why was E INK not used for the Touch Time?
DB: We are huge fans of E INK and we are the only watch manufacturer currently making watches with that display technology. On this particular project we needed a display which had a higher resolution on a small screen size than E INK displays are currently able to do.

aBtR: Will it be possible to update a Touch Time watch with new features or updated software?
DB: Currently, like any digital watch the Touch Time will ship with all of its code built-in. Not upgradeable by a customer at this time.

aBtR: Are there any perks or savings passed onto the Kickstarter backers?
DB: We have a major discount off the final retail price. Kickstarter backers can get the Touch Time watch starting at now, versus pricing starting at 9 at launch.

aBtR: The Touch Time has already greatly exceeded its goal with over 1000 backers, what’s next for Phosphor?
DB: First we are anxious to get this product shipping and in the hands of all of our Kickstarter supporters, and in 2013 introduce this product into major chains/resellers to make a lasting impact in the watch market. After that, we have some new exciting ideas…

94380460c0c9184260aa844384c05a57 large Phosphor Touch Time Watch On Kickstarter + Interview

Phosphor has put their spin on the relatively new “Smartwatch” scene by designing something closer to an anti-smartwatch. As interesting and promising as smart watches look, the syncing and charging aspect is definitely a roadblock for some buyers that simply want a reliable and simple watch with some truly useful features. Plus, with the majority of new Smartwatches you will need a Bluetooth profile 4.0 capable phone. The results of the Touch Time Kickstarter project are already very positive and it seems that Phosphor may have struck gold in an attempt to update the digital watch archetype for a more modern wrist.

We really like how this project is shaping up and are excited to see just how much funding can be raised before the project closes on September 30th. As mentioned in the review, backers can get the basic model with a stainless steel case and silicone strap for . After the cut-off date, pricing will rise to 9 for the base model so interested people should make their way over to the Touch Time Kickstarter project page here and reserve their watch.
