Posted: 02 Aug 2012 06:21 PM PDT

Delight Lamp is a kitchen lamp that creates an intimate illumination for folks who enjoy homemade meal together with friends. As Xiao explains, "The design is generated based on people's sensorial stimulation and behavioral demands." The lights are controlled by a mobile app that allows you to control the intensity, color, direction as well as height of the illumination and creates a comfy atmosphere.

RWA’s Rita Award Honorees Include eBooks This Year

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 04:47 PM PDT

id="attachment_46432" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 259px"> src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/C_Rita.jpg" alt="" title="C_Rita" width="249" height="249" class="size-full wp-image-46432" /> class="wp-caption-text">Photo courtesy of rsowens.com

/> The Romance Writers of America recently held its annual conference, and one of the highlights of each year's event is the awarding of the Rita awards. Named for one of the founders of RWA, Rita Clay Estrada, Ritas are awarded to romance titles in thirteen different categories and, until 2012, were limited to books in print.

At this year's event, however, two Ritas were awarded to ebook titles, one for romance novella and the other for contemporary single title.

"This is a very big deal. It's as if a YouTube video won an Oscar for best feature film," said Richard Curtis, literary agent and founder of digital publisher E-reads, in a post for Digital Book World's blog.  "It's hard to believe that the rest of the publishing industry will follow suit any time soon, but in this revolutionary era, wonders that we said would not come to pass for a decade seem to materialize in six months. So  – keep your eye on those National Book Award nominees."

The romance genre as a whole has been an early adopter of digital reading from the beginning of the e-reader device popularity. Several well-known romance publishers, like Harlequin, were some of the first to establish ebook-only and imprints. Other publishers, like predominately erotica genre Ellora's Cave, also launched as digital-first imprints. These publishers are meeting the demand romance fans have for new and more readily available content, while also meeting the needs of romance authors who wish to connect with their fans at a much faster rate than they could under traditional print publishing models. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Lighting with Balls

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 03:12 PM PDT

The KUGL light transforms the idea of lighting in the form of stationary objects into a mobile system of induction-charged units with an adorably unorthodox globe shape. Each ball features a flat, magnetic surface on it’s lower hemisphere that allows it to be mounted on any metal surface and twisted to achieve the desired directional light. After use, simply throw it on the docking station until it’s needed again. Genius!

Blackberry Playbook LTE to be released in Canada August 9th

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 01:41 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-46363 aligncenter" title="Blackberry-Playbook-4G-LTE" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Blackberry-Playbook-4G-LTE.jpg" alt="" width="618" height="381" />

Research in Motion has been developing a successor to the original Playbook tablet that will allow you to use it while on the go. They have built a new model that will give you full fledged data access via 4G and LTE. This is a boon for executives and people who travel lots and WIFI will simply not cut it. RIM has confirmed with us today that their new model will be dropping in Canada August 9th. Other markets such as the USA and Europe don’t have a definitive release schedule yet.  Bell, Rogers and Telus will all be offering dataplans and the ability to purchase the tablet within plenty of stores that normally offer only smartphones.

The new Playbook LTE Model is basically the same as the original Playbook, except there will be only a 32 GB model up for grabs. The processor has also received a boost to a dual-core 1.5GHz. This gives you plenty of storage to store your music and video files and to play games. RIM has released a new Media Hub that allows you to connect up your various Blackberry devices and stream it to your amp and speaker system via NFC.

The Playbook took awhile to get off the ground originally due to the early iteration of the QNX operating system and the long wait for Android compatibility.  The Playbook in general got a new lease on life when the functionality to load in your favorite Android apps became a reality.

We will be reviewing this unit as soon as it is released and don’t forget to get all of your Blackberry Android Apps from our Good e-Reader App Store. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Marvel cancels ‘Thanos: Son of Titan’ Comic Series

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 12:02 PM PDT

class="size-large wp-image-46419 aligncenter" title="thanos-miniseries-canceled" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/1590296-12_29_2010_3_20_16_pm-1024x732.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="428" />

Thanos the Mad Titan took the Marvel Universe by storm when he wrecked havoc with the Infinity Gauntlet many years ago. Recently he was showcased in one of the end-scenes in the most recent Avengers movie. A new mini-series was set to be launched in the next few months that chronicled the origins of our favorite super-villain.  It was set to be penned by writer Joe Keatinge and artist Rich Elson. Marvel has now cancelled this series with no rhyme or reason.

Thanos creator Jim Starlin was pissed at Disney and Marvel when his beloved creation was in the Avengers movie. He never received compensation for the character being in the movie and no royalties were ever issued. He mentioned in a recent interview that “This is the second film that had something I created for Marvel in it – the Infinity Gauntlet in Thor being the other – and both films I had to pay for my own ticket to see them.  Financial compensation to the creators of these characters doesn’t appear to be part of the equation.”

Marvel is reportedly struggling to find records relating to the period in the mid-’70s when Thanos debuted in its comics. This factor is probably the main reason why the digital comic series was cancelled. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

A Life With The Stove

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 10:29 AM PDT

The Stove is an emergency stove that was inspired by the Great East Japan Earthquake of Japan. It basically is a design that allows you to use it for cooking and charging batteries. As the designer explains, "the wood or wooden pellets for the stove are environmentally friendly type of fuel that is easy to handle." Although intended for earthquake prone Japan, the stove can find value in many other regions as well.

Embracing geotagging: how to journal your trips (and contribute to Google Earth) with snapshots

Embracing geotagging how to journal your trips and contribute to Google Earth with snapshots

Geotagging. It’s not exactly a long, lost art, but it’s certainly not something most folks bother to do after a trip. Avid travelers, hikers and the general outdoorsy crowd have been embracing the feature for years, though, and it’s actually seeping into the mainstream without most individuals even noticing. How so? Smartphones. Given the proliferation of iPhones, Android handsets and Windows Phone devices making their way onto the market — coupled with the explosive use of geo-minded social networks like Path, Instagram and Foursquare — an entire generation is now growing up in a geotagged world. Phone users have it easy; so long as there’s a data connection and an embedded GPS module (commonplace in modern mobile devices), there lies the ability to upload a photo with a patch of metadata embedded. Snap a shot at a national park, upload it, and just like that, viewers and friends from around the world now have an idea as to what a specific place on the Earth looks like.

For travel hounds like myself, that’s insanely powerful. I’m the kind of person that’ll spend hours lost in Google Earth, spinning the globe around and discovering all-new (to me, at least) locales thanks to the magic of geotagging. It’s sort of the photographic equivalent to putting a face to a name. By stamping latitude, longitude, altitude and a specific time to any given JPEG, you’re able to not only show the world what you saw, but exactly when and where you saw it. It’s a magical combination, and with GPS modules finding their way into point-and-shoot cameras — not to mention external dongles like Solmeta’s magnificent N3 (our review here) — there’s plenty of opportunity to start adding location data to your photos. For more on the “Why would I want to?” and “How would I best display ‘em?” inquiries, let’s meet up after the break.

Junghans 1972 Chronoscope & Mega Solar

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 08:52 AM PDT

Junghans 1972 Chronoscope Quarz watch Junghans 1972 Chronoscope & Mega Solar

Those on a relative budget wanting a nice sport watch should take a good look at the 1972 collection of timepieces from German brand Junghans. Often known for their atomic clock controlled watches, Junghans has an interesting assortment of both modern and vintage inspired quartz or mechanical watches. The 1972 collection takes direction and inspiration from sport-themed watches made in that era. Though, there is a slick modern edge to the designs which fits the brand’s larger collection of timepieces. I do enjoy how they took a classic look and updated it a bit.

Junghans is among the few brands that uses many movements derived from Seiko. The 1972 collection currently has three movement options, and I believe that at least two of them are Seiko Japanese quartz calibers. Two of the movements are “Solar” meaning that they use light to recharge the batteries.

The 1972 collection watches each have a 43.3mm wide steel case, with a rotating diver’s bezel in either steel or black tone. The case designs are masculine and attractive with a distinct vintage twist. You’ll find an assortment of strap options as well as a nice metal bracelet. The dials have a sapphire crystal and the cases are water resistant to 100 meters.

Entry level for the collection is the 1972 Chronoscope Quartz watch. This has a 60 minute chronograph and 24 hour display (AM/PM indicator), along with the date. There are three dial color options (black with orange, blue and white, or white and black). While basic, these are arguably the best looking of the bunch and are priced at 549 Euros.

Next you have the 1972 Chronoscope Solar. This watch contains a quartz chronograph movement with alarm. The movement is also light powered. Seiko fans will clearly recognize this movement. Aside from some color changes and a different dial, this watch is similar in theme to the 1972 Chronoscope Quartz. These 1972 Chronoscope Solar watches will retail for 649 Euros. Topping the current 1972 collection is the 1972 Mega Solar. Based on the existing Junghans Mega Solar collection, this watch contains their popular atomic clock controlled, solar powered quartz movement. You can find this movement in other pieces as well. The analog display is augmented with a small LCD screen on the dial. These pieces offer an interesting take on the retro 1972 theme with a complication and function that would not have been available in that era. This Junghans 1972 Mega Solar retails for 699 Euros.

Its name might not make sense until you take a closer look at Lamp3′s wood legs, metal shades, and LED panels. If you’re still not catching on, it’s time to get your peepers checked! The concept is almost too simple, but it’s quite nice to look at.
