Hunger Games Trilogy Outsells Harry Potter

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 03:09 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-47279 aligncenter" title="hunger_games_trilogy" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/hunger_games_trilogy1.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="279" />

Suzanne Collins has only written three books ever, and they are doing quite well. According to recent statistics from the American arm of Amazon, this trilogy has outsold the entire Harry Potter franchise.

Sara Nelson, the editorial director of book and Kindle at Amazon said in a statement, Interestingly, this series is only three books versus Harry Potter's seven, and to achieve this result in just four years is a great testament to both the popularity of the work and, we think, the growth in reading digitally during that time. Customers love these books and all three titles are consistently on our Top 10 lists in both print and Kindle formats, and The Hunger Games is also the most-borrowed book in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library."

Part of the success of the Hunger Games trilogy is that ever since the Kindle Lending Library started up, these books continued to be super popular. They also gained a tremendous amount of momentum when Amazon unveiled the ability for Kindle owners to lend books to their friends for up to two weeks.  The main reason why the Hunger Games saw massive movement in sales, is that their eBooks were available at soon as the printed versions came out. Harry Potter was late to the game with their digital content with no eBooks being available at all, until only a few months ago.

In July, Scholastic, who publishes the trilogy, announced that they have  more than 50 million copies of the original three books in The Hunger Games in print and digital formats in the U.S. Amazon declined to comment on how many copies it has sold. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle Available until September 1st

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 05:39 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-47238" title="samsung_galaxy_tab_2_70_" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/samsung_galaxy_tab_2_70_.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="477" />

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition has turned out to be a limited period offer and will only be available for 2 weeks starting from 19th August. So those who have been very excited with the Student Edition will also have to act fast if they don’t wish to end up licking their fingers. The special Student Edition version has a very appealing price tag of 0 with a few accessories thrown in at no extra cost. The accessories include a dockable keyboard and a USB adapter that will allow the tablet to be connected to other USB devices.

The tablet in itself is pretty decent and can be considered among the better Android ICS tablets in the 7 inch category. In fact, many had though the Student Edition version of the 7 inch tablet as Samsung’s answer to the Nexus 7 craze. This until Samsung came up with a more convincing 7 inch device to take on the likes of the Nexus 7. With a few more such devices such as the Kindle Fire 2, or the Acer Iconia Tab A110 slated for a release later in the year, Samsung too is expected have a competitor in this segment.

The hallmark of the new breed of 7 inch tablets are new generation of more powerful processors, latest operating system, and higher resolution displays while keeping the price at around the 0 to 0 mark. Nexus 7 is ruling the segment right now though the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition can pose some stiff competition to it as the Samsung offering includes front and back cameras and a microSD card slot, both of which is missing on the Nexus 7. Then there of course is the keyboard and USB adapter that has suddenly made the Student Edition a very sought after device. This in spite of it featuring a less capable CPU and lower resolution display.

So those who have been yearning for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition, it is officially out now, but only until September 1st.

Hp is Forming a New Division and Getting Back into the Tablet Business

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 04:03 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-47247" title="HP" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/HP1.jpg" alt="" width="550" height="413" />

The TouchPad fiasco is still fresh in everybody’s mind, though HP does not seem to be the least bothered. The company is very keen to get back to the consumer tablet segment and have formed a new internal division — ‘Mobility Global Business Unit’ to design and produce the device. Also interestingly, they are banking on Albero Torres who used to be in charge of Nokia’s Meebo products for their latest tablet venture.

“Our new Mobility Global Business Unit initially will focus on consumer tablets and will expand to additional segments and categories where we believe we can offer differentiated value to our customers,” read the HP internal memo a copy of which is with the verge and is signed by Todd Bradley who heads HP’s recently-merged Printing and Personal Systems Group. Alberto Torres will start his operations at HP from Sept 3 and will be reporting directly to Todd. As of now, the Mobility GBU’s role will be to “accelerate our tablet strategy and begin to execute products against our consumer/SMB target.”

HP is already into developing a business tablet with its PC Global Business Unit headed by James Mouton entrusted with the task. However, the newly formed Mobility GBU has been kept independent and won’t interfere with the operations of the PC GBU.

HP had spent billions on the WebOS and TouchPad project though all of it had led to a colossal failure. MeeGo to has never tasted success though much of that has to do with a change of business strategy on part of Nokia as it aligned itself with Microsoft’s Windows platform. What remains to be seen is whether the new HP venture pays off. The TouchPad was never that bad a device. Also, HP surely has learnt their lesson from the TouchPad failure and the forthcoming tablet could well mark the resurrection of HP in mainstream tablet market.

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Watch

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 02:28 AM PDT

Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon watch 2 Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Watch

This isn’t the first tourbillon watch by Jaquet Droz, though it is the most elegant. A simple concept, this Grande Seconde Tourbillon takes the standard figure 8 dial design and inserts a classy looking tourbillon into the seconds dial. The resulting look is gorgeous and the tourbillon has a neat secret, but can you detect the amusing irony of the watch name?

The original Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde watch was named as such because the seconds dial was placed in the larger part of the figure 8 style stacked dials. That is why it was called the “big seconds,” because that dial was larger than the dial for the hour and minutes. In this case, to insert the tourbillon (which doubles as the seconds indicator), they used the smaller dial for the seconds. The watch is still called “Grande Seconde,” but no longer is. Jaquet Droz could have produced a larger diameter tourbillon for the lower dial, or just changed the name of the watch. They didn’t do either, but the second option would have made more sense in my opinion.

Aside from that naming oversight, the tourbillon is really nice. Jaquet Droz uses a sapphire crystal case for the tourbillon. A bit similar in style to a flying tourbillon (but cooler), the tourbillon in this case looks as though it is floating in air as it revolves around itself. I also think that the simple looking Grande Seconde watch dials are benefited by the addition of the visual mechanics in the tourbillon. These finally look like haute horology items.

The Grande Seconde Tourbillon is available in 18k white or rose gold in a 43mm wide case. The white gold version has a slate colored dial with Geneva stripes, while the rose gold version has a more traditional looking grand fau enamel dial. Both are really nice but I like the Cote de Geneva striped dial better – especially thanks to the overlapping translucent dials that I believe might be sapphire crystal as well.

You can see the movement through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback on the rear of the watch. Thankfully the mechanical movement is an automatic and has a very attractive 18k rose gold rotor. Further, the in-house made caliber 25JD movement has a power reserve of a full seven days. The design and decor of the movement is also quite lovely. I don’t think that Jaquet Droz will have much problem moving these nice timepieces in their stores. Despite having a petite seconds, this JD Tourbillon is a “Grande” looker.

Levitated Mass

Posted: 19 Aug 2012 12:54 AM PDT

The Levity chaise-lounge is composed of 12mm thick birch plywood and 12mm thick birch rods that together create abstract geometries that suggest levitation of a reclined person. The slender structure looks as if it might not support the weight of an individual, but the simple construction is lightweight and surprisingly sturdy with 20 supporting legs held firmly in place.

ebrary Provides Content Aligned with Common Core Standards

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 11:21 PM PDT

class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-47259" title="Common Core State Standards" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Common-Core-State-Standards-300x106.png" alt="" width="300" height="106" /> /> One of the key flaws of the US educational system as identified among teachers and parents is the constant feeling of disjointedness when it comes to new curricula; add that to the fact that each state gets to determine its own curriculum, yet the test scores of the entire nation are compared to those of students in other countries.

While not yet reaching the point of adopting one national curriculum, the Common Core is a new set of guidelines that has been adopted by almost every state, the only holdouts being Alaska, Nebraska, Virginia, Texas, and Minnesota and a handful of US territories.

Now, ebrary is making Common Core adoption even easier and making it more feasible for schools to put these standards into practice by providing digital content that meets the Core's guidelines.

"ebrary believes in supporting both students and teachers with the most relevant content available while providing libraries with flexible acquisition options to achieve the greatest return on their investment. We're excited to be able to offer content that maps directly to Common Core Standards," said Leslie Lees, ebrary's Vice President of Content Development, in a press release.  "In order to achieve that value alongside applicable subject matter, many libraries start with a continually growing collection like Schools and Educators Complete and then supplement with patron driven acquisition, short-term loan, and perpetual archive – including expertly selected packs in critical areas."

ebrary has instituted a couple of different options for schools and individual teachers who are actively looking for digital content that will align with the standards. It has over 3000 titles that can be purchased individually, which also coincides with its pricing structure that allows libraries to offer the titles in their catalogs but only charges them for them once patrons actually check them out. This results in a greater volume catalog for smaller-budgeted libraries, as well as not requiring as hefty an investment up front.

ebrary offers its platform on apps for iPhone and iPad, as well as Android powered devices. Along with the usual interactive tools like hyperlinks, embedded videos, and ebrary's InfoTools which allows words in the text to link directly to more online content, ebrary also offers its interface in multiple languages in keeping with the global push in educational standards. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;
