Go Nutty for this Lamp

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 06:35 PM PDT

The Acorn by Vasiliy Butenko transforms an ordinary cotton rope into an attractive, simple and inexpensive pendant lamp. The construction process is quick and easy an only requires the rope, a bottle and a bonding agent. The rope is wound around the bottle creating layers that don’t require an internal frame. Bright LEDs provide concentrated light that won’t burn the cotton. In a number of dark colors, it’s both soft and masculine.

Not-So-Dumb Dumbells

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 05:01 PM PDT

The original idea for the Quick Click weights came from the designer’s wife noticing that in her weight training classes, other women were struggling with the old-school way of changing weights with clamps and springs which interrupted the flow of the workout. This redesign maximizes the effectiveness of the workout, making it possible to quickly transition between weights by simply using the built in hand grips to drop and add weight. Better yet, the entire system of barbell and weights is stackable and takes up way less room than conventional sets, making it perfect for compact spaces.

Smart Streetlight

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:26 PM PDT

Smart design meets urban light in this minimal LED street lamp design by Igor Solovyov. The steel and aluminum-cast lamp reaches upward with just a slight curve at the top; enough to cast a bright light to the sidewalk without overly-obstructing the view of the sky above. A cluster of large and small multidirectional LEDs ensure light is dispersed as efficiently as possible to the area below.

Mobile Living With Glam

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 01:52 PM PDT

Monohedron is a prefab house that is mobile and suits almost any environment or climate. The idea is to move away from the predictable comfort of a brick and concrete home to something more versatile as this. With the options of adding layers of floors as per needs, the concept of your dream home takes on a whole new meaning. Customized and prefab are two words that don't usually gel together well, but looks like this mobile home has sort of nailed it.

Canon Recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs

Canon Recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs

Canon has decided to recall 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i digital cameras. The recall is due to a chemical used in the camera's rubber grips. This kind of chemical can result in a reaction that changes the grips from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the user. Canon EOS Rebel T4i owners should immediately stop using their camera and contact Canon U.S.A. to replace rubber grips for free. [Engadget]

Adobe Digital Publishing Suite in Higher Education

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 10:39 AM PDT

id="attachment_47210" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 310px"> class="size-medium wp-image-47210" title="students-on-laptops-tablets-smartphones" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/students-on-laptops-tablets-smartphones-300x199.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="199" /> class="wp-caption-text">Photo courtesy of collegerecruiter.com

With all of the news about digital textbooks to come out of the publishing sector, it's easy to forget that higher education institutions take on a massive amount of publishing content that is not in the form of textbooks. Faculty research findings, journals, alumni information, prospective student mailings, all can create an expensive deficit for schools and a pointless carbon footprint on the environment.

Adobe, whose Digital Publishing Suite has tackled revolutionizing the digital periodical industry, has now brought in new clients from the higher education sector as well as made its product adaptable to the needs of the K-12 market as well. Trevor Bailey, Director of K-12 and HED at Adobe, spoke to GoodeReader about how Adobe's DPS can save both budget dollars and the environment.

"A higher education institution publishes a lot of content that is not textbooks. There is a lot of material that universities can publish digitally. We're looking at how can we can we get institutions to focus more on digital and less on paper printing."

"The Digital Publishing Suite starts with InDesign to format layout. What we did within that workflow, it's just a small jump to put it in a digital format instead of a print layout."

Adobe has brought its Suite to several major universities in the US to demonstrate ways that the workflow of InDesign can streamline the timing of getting materials to the necessary recipients as efficiently and inexpensively as possible by taking advantage of the growing tablet platform. One university has even incorporated DPS into its journalism program, in order to ensure that graduates in the field are as knowledgeable as possible about one of the leading software suites for digitizing periodicals.

As for public schools, one of the most innovative possibilities is the creation of the annual yearbook. Normally an extensively time-consuming task for a team of students and faculty, DPS can speed up the layout process. In addition, schools could have the option to create "digital yearbooks" rather than the expensive print editions, saving on student cost and storage space for the finished project.

While Bailey went to great lengths to point out the increase in productivity and the cost savings to schools who opt to take the bulk of their cumbersome print communications to the tablet users, the potential for better environmental stewardship could not be overlooked.

"There is definitely a factor of going green. It's difficult to place a true dollar value on it. One tree is approximately 8000 sheets of paper. You end up with a much greener solution when you go digital. The amount of power is takes to create a digital publication has a far less environmental impact. It makes sense that it is a much greener and simpler solution." />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Seiko Golgo 13 Watches

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 09:04 AM PDT

seikoseagolgo1 Seiko Golgo 13 Watches

This year Seiko will have released four limited edition watches in honor of the famous Japanese manga series Golgo 13. “Duke Togo,” aka Golgo 13 is the main character of the manga series that has been running since the late 1960s. In Japan, Golgo 13 is extremely recognizable, and the four watches are true fanboy collector items of the highest quality. Now you too can kill enemies just like Duke! This isn’t the first time Seiko has created limited edition watches for an anime or manga series. In the past I discussed pieces such as this high-end Seiko Galante watch for Astro Boy. Another super cool watch.

It has been too long since I have enjoyed some good anime. As an American I had to grow up with Japanese culture from afar, but it was still very influential. I’ve long enjoyed Japanese cartoons and characters – even if I didn’t have all the cultural lenses with which to fully understand them. I need to catch up a bit. What good stuff has come out in the last few years that is on par with movies like Akira and shows like Cowboy Bebop? To some it might seem strange that Seiko is releasing limited edition watches for comics or cartoons. However in Japan these are serious cultural characters and the fact that they are animated or drawn does not make them any less important or influential.

Golgo13 Seiko Golgo 13 Watches

Seiko Golgo 13 EPD.jpg Seiko Golgo 13 Watches

The first of the Seiko Golgo 13 limited edition watches is based on their recent limited edition EPD Digital watch released last year. This piece I believe is just called the Seiko Limited Edition Golgo 13 EPD watch. “EPD” is Seiko’s own term for their high-resolution e-ink display. There are two styles of the Seiko Golgo 13 EPD waches (ref. SBPA009 and SBPA011). The two versions offer slightly different colored pushers and the SBPA009 comes on a metal bracelet versus a leather strap. The e-ink display has a range of screens which show the time, world, time, and calendar functions. The quartz movement is also solar powered. Mixed into the watch’s functionality are images of Duke Togo from Golgo 13 – I thought that was pretty interesting. In this case Seiko actually included Golgo 13 into the programming of the watch. The TV screen-like display and bracelet give the piece a retro-futuristic vibe, the steel roughly 44mm wide case is black IP. Seiko will offer the SBPA009 as a limited edition of 500 pieces and the SBPA011 as a limited edition of 1000 pieces. Prices are 63,000 and 57,750 Yen respectively.

Not quite yet released are the limited edition Seiko Golgo 13 Land, Sea, and Air Prospex models. According to Seiko they come out in September. These watches really extend the Golgo 13 limited edition watch concept further, and make for watches that even non-fanboys of the manga can like. Prospex watches are Seiko’s “Professional Specification” watches and range from good durable sport watches to really high-end professional-use dive watches. Makes sense for a professional assassin right? Each of the watches are based on existing Seiko timepieces but have special color schemes and Golgo 13 engravings and branding.

My favorite pieces is the Seiko Golgo 13 Sea watch (Ref. SBBN023). This piece is based on one of the Marine Master (Marinemaster) Professional watches in the popular “tuna can” case. The 47mm wide steel case is black IP coated and water resistant to 300 meters. It is rated as a pro use saturation diver. All Seiko fans will recognize this design. The watch dial has red accents to look like gun site cross hairs. Inside the watch is a Seiko quartz caliber 7C46 movement with a day/date function and a five year battery life. Everyone needs one of these Marine Masters in their collection. The Seiko Golgo 13 Sea watch is limited to 500 pieces and is priced at 126,000 Yen, making it the most expensive of all the limited edition Golgo 13 timepieces.

The next and least expensive of all the Golgo 13 Seiko watches is the Golgo 13 Air watch (Ref. SBDL011). Seiko also sometimes calls it the Golgo 13 Sky. This is based on popular Seiko pilot watches and again is done in black and red. The case is 43mm wide and has a rotating slide-rule bezel. On the metal bracelet, this is one of the most handsome version of the standard quartz Seiko pilot watch. Inside is the solar powered Seiko quartz caliber V172 movement. It has the time, date, chronograph, and alarm. The Seiko Golgo 13 Air watch will be limited to 500 pieces and price is 63,000 Yen.

The last model is mechanical and one of Seiko’s famous Land Master (Landmaster) watches. These are rather rare, but cool watches that Seiko collector’s like. This particular Golgo 13 model is actually based on the Fieldmaster watch line. The Seiko Golgo 13 Land watch (Ref. SBDC021) comes complete with a bund-style leather strap and rotating compass bezel. If you want to be like Duke, then wear it in the snow. Seiko even Scotch-Guards the strap for extra durability. The Golgo 13 Land watch comes in a case that is very similar to the Sea’s Marine Master case. They are both 47mm wide, but the Land is almost 1mm thinner and is water resistant to 200 versus 300 meters for the Sea. Inside the watch is Seiko’s 6R15 automatic mechanical movement. Like the Sea, the dial of the Land has been made to have a thematic cross hair in it. The Seiko Golgo 13 Land watch is limited to 400 pieces and is priced at 115,500 Yen. Interesting that the quartz Sea model is a bit more expensive.

All of the Seiko Golgo 13 watches will only be officially available in Japan. As always, Seiko isn’t too sure what the rest of the world will think of its special Japanese culture timepieces. For those outside of Mr. Togo’s homeland, you can more than likely score these timepieces online. For more information you can see Seiko’s official page here (in Japanese).

Time To Wake Up!

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 07:29 AM PDT

The adorable Sub Morning is quite a quirky way to wake up in the morning! The dang thing actually requires you to submerge it in water in order to shut it off. The crisp display and added advantage of being a submarine, makes it more of a bath-time toy than an alarm. Oh well, ducky will have to go if you want to play submarines in your bathtub!

Sub Morning is a 2012 iF Design Talents entry.

Kid Friendly Leap Pad 2 Now Available

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 05:56 AM PDT

src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/LeapPad.jpg" alt="" title="LeapPad" width="640" height="493" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-47228" />

Kids (and of course their parents) take note, there is a whole new tablet in the offing in the form of LeapPad 2 that promises to take things forward from its hugely successful first gen version, the LeapPad. The latest iteration marks an all round improvement over the LeapPad that was launched in 2011 and had gone on to what its makers claim as the number one tablet for kid’s entertainment and education.

So among the things to look out for on the new LeapPad 2 include a faster and better processor, 4 GB of on-board storage which is twice that of the LeapPad, and a whole lot of fun and educational games, apps and other contents. Battery too has been improved to allow for longer run times while there is a recharger pack option as well to ensure kids still more time with the device.

“LeapPad was one of the hottest products for kids in 2011. We took everything kids and parents loved about LeapPad and took it to a whole new level with the new LeapPad2,” said Greg Ahearn, chief marketing officer at LeapFrog.

The tablet also includes new higher resolution front and back cameras and video recorders that should provide further impetus to the creative side of the young minds. In fact, the fun just does not stop here as the Cartoon Director creativity app that comes pre-loaded on the device allows kids to make their own movies with the images they have snapped. The built-in microphone will also allow the kids to record their own voice and include their own narrative in the video to add a personal touch to it.

Apart from the Cartoon Director, other apps that the LeapPad 2 comes pre-loaded with include Pet Pad, interactive Art Studio, LeapFrog Learning Songs along with one more app from a collection of 4 popular apps that can be downloaded free from the LeapFrog App Center.

Similarly, among the popular games that the LeapPad 2 comes loaded with include Letter Factory, Disney’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates, Olivia and CrayolaArt Adventure all of which has been specifically designed for kids aged three to five.

A tablet device no matter how advanced it is will be of little use if there aren’t enough content available to go with the device. The new LeapPad 2 excels here as its makers have come up with enough content in the form of games, music, videos, e-books and more to keep the kids busy with the device. All the content that is hosted at the LeapFrog App Center has also been certified by LeapPad’s own highly experienced team of experts to be perfectly safe for kid’s consumption.

Another of prime activity to be engaged with the LeapPad 2 is e-books and there are enough available to suit every taste and individual requirements. As per LeapPad parlance, the Ultra e-books are interactive story books that are advanced enough to adjust automatically to the child’d own reading pace. There are three different levels that progress from the simple to more complex words and sentences as the children’s own reading abilities improve. A unique feature to look forward to is the ‘Learn to ReadCollection of Ultra e-books‘ that includes 300 keywords to help early readers in developing phonics and decoding skills, sight word recognition and reading comprehension. What should be more appealing to the kids is that classics from Fairy Tales toAdventure Stories are part of the new series.

The LeapPad 2 also boasts of nice music playback capabilities via its own music player. Coming this fall is a new MP3 Player that will enable students to download and manage their own music files.

“The incredible new features and breadth of content available on LeapPad2 offer kids more engaging experiences than ever before. Whether a game, video, music or eBook, parents trust LeapFrog will provide their children with compelling and age-appropriate educational entertainment on the powerful and kid-tough LeapPad2,” said Greg Ahearn.

The LeapPad 2 is available in green, pink as well as a special Disney Princess bundle. Prices start at .99 for the base version while the special LeapPad2 Disney Princess Bundle will cost 9.99. The tablet is deemed fit for kids aged 3 to 9 years.
