Phone companies see loss of broadband subscribers for first time in Q2, cable continues to gain

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 05:45 PM PDT

It wasn’t all that long ago that the phone company was the source for internet access, first with traditional dial-up and later with DSL. That quickly began to change as cable companies started offering their own alternative, though, and the AP is now reporting that the second quarter of this year saw something of a milestone. According to its tally, the eight largest phone companies in the US lost a collective 70,000 broadband subscribers in Q2 (DSL or otherwise), while the four biggest cable companies continued to grow with 290,000 new subscribers. As it notes, AT&T is the main culprit for that overall decline, with it losing 96,000 broadband subscribers while the other phone companies all saw modest growth. It also notes that second quarter is a generally weak one for all broadband providers, what with college students cancelling their subscriptions before heading home — but, then again, this is the first time that the phone companies haven’t seen at least some growth during the period. Of course, this is also just home broadband we’re talking about — mobile broadband is another matter altogether.

Better Than Roomba?

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 04:33 PM PDT

In a way yes, because this robotic vacuum cleaner uses eco-sense for operations! The Giving Tree is as robotic as the next iProduct and it cleans your space with TLC. The eco angle is included via the power system. It has been designed to conserve electricity and in a way harness some juice while it's working. Before the engineers start their tirade, let me tell you that the idea is worth exploring. Unlike some commercially available robotic cleaners whose batteries die out within a year or two, having an eco-backup plan sounds better. What do you think?

Perfectly Tipsy

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 02:58 PM PDT

The Hurricane is a fun way to blend and mix your cocktails. Unless you are Bond who likes his Martini shaken not stirred, you can expect this appliance to blend you a mean mojito or a spectacular rum punch. All you need to do is choose your poison and then add in the ingredients as directed. A step-by-step guide is displayed on the screen and it sets the ball rolling for you. Concoct classics like Tom Collins or something new and exotic; just don't get too carried away with the drinks…that's all!

Hurricane is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab shortlisted entry.

Canon recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs, says rubber grips can lead to skin rash

Canon recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs, says rubber grips can lead to skin rash

We’ve covered our fair share of product recalls over the years, but this one almost certainly takes the cake when looking at pure zaniness. Canon has recalled its EOS Rebel T4i — some 68,200 units — “due to a risk of allergic reaction.” You read that right. As the story goes, a chemical used in the camera’s rubber grips “can result in a reaction that changes the grips from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the consumer,” and while the company has only received a single report of a consumer developing a “minor rash” after contact, that’s obviously enough to issue to recall. It involves T4i units with a 12-digit serial number that contain a second digit that is a “3″ or “4″ and a sixth digit that is a “1.” If that’s you, you’re advised to stop using the camera and ping Canon USA to have replacement rubber grips installed free of charge. Specifically, you can ring 855-902-3277 and be prepared to be placed on hold for the better part of your adult life.

The Kisai Driver

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 01:24 PM PDT

Design submitted by Firdaus from Malaysia.

Firdaus says: This is a watch phone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_phone) design for Tokyoflash Japan. Code named Kisai Driver (abbreviation for Driving Revolution), this watch phone design uses custom Google's Android operating system and has features like most of today's smart watches.

Kisai Driver is specially designed and inspired with futuristic and uniqueness, two elements that cannot be separated from Tokyoflash. Since the nature of Tokyoflash is all about deviant from mainstream trend in watch fashion, the challenge in designing Kisai Driver is a bit tough. The design should be new and innovative from any other watch phones in the market and at the same time retains the elements and functionality of a watch phone.

Kisai Driver will have a proprietary app called (code named) Zone. Zone is an application that shape and control the ecosystem of Kisai Driver GUI. The main element of Zone is the watch display, which means the ecosystem will show the watch display as home screen by default, during idle and stand by.

Whether you are gadget freak, design enthusiast or tech wiz, Kisai Driver delivers modern technology and futuristic design that gives unique fashion statement to the wearer.

Kisai Driver is carefully designed to be unique, futuristic looking and at the same time ergonomic and classy. The curved display is very eye friendly and the long display allows convenient text messaging for this small form factor device. The camera is located at a nice place for making video call like in spy agent movies or to take own picture and share it to social media.

The Kisai Driver, 4.7 out of 5 based on 126 ratings

Chair Full of Treasure!

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:47 AM PDT

Inspired by global economic crisis, the Anti Crise chair merges the notion of saving piggy-bank-style with a modern chair design that you can break open when you’re broke! Like a piggy-bank, simply fill the hollow chair with coins using the slot at the top of the back. When the time is right, remove the saw embedded in the back of the chair and saw away! After collecting the reward, the hollow space that’s left can be use to hold magazines or other items.

The clever design’s bold, red accents subtly suggest a theme of “emergency.”

Microsoft debuts revised SkyDrive website and desktop apps, Android app coming soon

Microsoft just recently gave it’s web-based email offering a sweeping overhaul, and it’s now also done the same for its cloud-based storage service. As detailed in a typically extensive blog post, the company has today launched an all new as SkyDrive.com (rolling out over the next 24 hours), one that now defaults to a tile-based layout and boasts new features like instant search and a contextual toolbar. As the company notes, it’s also designed with tablets in mind, in addition to desktop web browser. What’s more, Microsoft has also rolled out updated SkyDrive apps for Windows and OS X, which promise faster uploads and other performance improvements, and it says it’ll finally have an Android app in “just a few weeks.” Hit the source link below for a look at it and all the other changes.
