Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Will Run Windows RT

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 06:23 PM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46929" title="Lenovo_Yoga" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Lenovo_Yoga.jpg" alt="" width="478" height="269" />

Remember the IdeaPad Yoga tablet that Lenovo had unveiled at the CES event early in the year. More than six months down the line, the tablet now seems finally headed to the production line, but not before incorporating some changes in its internals. The tablet will now be running an ARM chipset and not Intel and will accordingly boot Windows RT and not  Windows 8 Pro. Its the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor that seems to have been finalized to make up the core of the IdeaPad Yoga. The tablet though is likely to retain the extended stretching capability that would allow the display to fold back until its outer surface meets that of the keypad section.

Joanna Stern from ABC News also points out the tablet will be out roughly the same time Microsoft will be unveiling the Windows 8 as well as the Surface line of tablet, that is Oct 26.

Lenovo already has planned the IdeaTab Tablet 2 which will run Windows 8 Pro and will be targeting both the business and home users. Lenovo has also a second version of the Yoga i the pipeline, one that will have a battery life twice that of the Intel version.

Further details are awaited.

Chef-approved Cooking

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 06:23 PM PDT

Although they may have the accurate recipe in hand, professional chefs know that the perfect stew or soup is always seasoned using approximations. It's got to do with gut instincts I suppose, and unfortunately not all of us are blessed with that. So if you are looking for professional chef quality food at home, then you need the help of Ingressure.

Ingressure is an appliance that accurately measures the ingredients of your soup, sauce or stew. It is intuitive enough to let you know how much salt, pepper or spice you need for the dish. It uses advanced sensors and comes with multiple attachments to suit your purpose.

Ingressure is a 2012 Electrolux Design Lab Shortlisted entry.

Development on next year's Gears of War Judgment will continue without its creative director. A statement provided to Kotaku today confirms that People Can Fly co-owner and creative director Adrian Chmielarz has quit the Warsaw, Poland studio, alongside senior artists Andrezj Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki.

Gears of War Judgment will be judged without its creative director.

"Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski, and Michal Kosieradzki have parted ways with People Can Fly and Epic Games in order to pursue other opportunities, which they will announce of their own accord," Epic Games president Mike Capps said.

Chmielarz's departure from Epic Games comes the week after director of production Rod Fergusson announced he had left the Gears of War house. Fergusson has joined Boston area BioShock Infinite developer Irrational Games, where he now serves as executive vice president of development.

It was also revealed today that Epic Games now wholly owns People Can Fly. Speaking to Joystiq, Epic Games vice president Mark Rein explained that it formerly held a controlling stake in the company, but not the entire outfit. It was not mentioned how much Epic Games spent to acquire the remaining stake in People Can Fly, and the company declined to comment.

Commissioning Work: Micklish Part 1

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 03:13 PM PDT

Over the past 5 years editing YD, I’ve noticed a clear divergence between two kinds of furniture designers – the ones who are pure creatives that rely on manufacturing partners and the “old school” kind – the ones who were craftsman long before they ever thought of themselves as designers. Last year, I embarked on a scary, yet exciting project to create several custom pieces for my home. I met a guy name Curtis Micklish – young, talented, gifted even if he didn’t know it.

He comes from the old school, built my hand and methodically perfected to suite the needs of each customer. I want to share my experience working with Curtis over the course of several months, from what started as a simple sketch of a sideboard, to a complete piece inspired by and named after the retro 35 mm Belomo – it was incredible to witness the entire chain of design executed from the hands of one person.

The early stages of design was exciting. I didn’t give Curtis much direction. I believe in letting a designer play whenever possible. My only restrictions were height and width to ensure the new sideboard would fit. He also quickly picked up on my minimalist aesthetic and a few weeks after our initial conversation he came to my office and showed me a sketch. It was long, streamline and stark in appearance. Made entirely of poplar wood with a light white wash, the yet unnamed sideboard became less austere. Complete with a set of tripod legs that gave it personality and a cubby hole for show & tell opportunities.

The construction begins. Out of his restored mid-century home (which he did himself), there’s a garage filled with dangerous looking machinery of which he obviously mastered. I watched him route the doors of the sideboard and listened to him tell me about his childhood. He comes from a family of craftsmen. He and his father are contractors but his eye for design eventually led him away from construction into doing his own thing. I could sense that infant creative spark surrounded by uncertainty and a bit of self doubt. Bigger than that was his passion. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. It’s just a matter of taking it day by day to get there.

By the end of the day, the frame was finished. The steel shelves were in and the doors routed.  Me? – completely excited! Come back tomorrow for part two.

Guessing Game #14

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 01:39 PM PDT

If I use this on you…where are you and what am I doing to you?

Any guesses?

Yes, the Guessing Game is back with a vengeance…Be honest, just look at the small pic and tell us what you think it is, the answer is after the jump. No prizes for guessing right, however you do win our appreciation and our salute!

If I aim and shoot this at you, it means you are drowning and I am saving you from going down underwater!

Save Trigger! This 2012 iF Design Talents entry is about a lifesaver that rolls into a gun-esque thang and can be hurled towards the drowning person from ashore. The idea is nice and worth exploring.

Scenic Seating

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 12:04 PM PDT

This coat rack/bench combination, called “A Tree in the Meadow,” consists of 20×20 thick maple slats situated in 18mm thick birch plywood, creating a visually stunning matrix that resembles the striking vision of a lone tree in a hayfield. The design skews our perception of storage and formal structural stability- umbrellas, newspaper, slippers and other small items can be stored among the slats while coats and bags can be placed on the extended slats that form the coat rack.

Microsoft trumpets Windows RT OEM partners, lists ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung

Microsoft trumpets Windows RT OEM partners, lists ASUS, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung

Following sharp comments from Acer’s JT Wang surrounding Microsoft’s decision to compete with vital OEM partners in the tablet space, Mike Angiulo — the vice president of Microsoft’s Ecosystem and Planning team — has stepped to the plate with a resounding “thank you” to those very associates. Aside from praising those who will be helping to make Windows RT more than a passing fad, the company affirmed that ASUS, Dell, Samsung and Lenovo will all be shipping ARM-based products with the aforementioned operating system onboard. This pretty much confirms that the Yoga will indeed ship as a WinRT variant, and it also makes clear that Dell’s hard work for a spot in the lineup paid off. Exact model details aren’t being disclosed, nor are ship dates, but it’s becoming abundantly clear that Microsoft is working overtime behind the scenes to give its allies equal footing come October 26th.

New Aakash II will be Relesed Soon

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 10:30 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46920" title="aakash 2" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/aakash-2.jpg" alt="" width="640" height="359" />

Human resource minister in India has confirmed one more time the new upgraded Aakash tablet will be formally launched very soon. The tablet was unveiled earlier in the year by IIT Mumbai and DataWind though a formal launch is slated during the end Aug-early Sept time frame. The minister though wasn’t forthcoming with any specific date or period and kept himself limited to ‘very soon’ only. The tablet was earlier was slated for an April-May launch though that never happened.

The Aakash II is a sequel to the Aakash that made a name for itself for being the world’s cheapest tablet though failed to impress with its lackluster performance and battery life. Aakash II is supposed to overcome all of that while still holding on to the price advantage. An upgraded 800 MHz ARM Cortex processor along with a 256 MB RAM is expected to keep things moving with the tablet though on-board storage will be a meager 2 GB. However, a good thing with Aakash II is that it will boot Android 4.0 ICS while providing the juice will be a 3200 mAH Li-ion Polymer battery that its makers claim will be good for 3 hours.

Recap: “Forever Sensor” at the RI Mini Maker Faire

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 09:25 AM PDT

On Saturday, Rith and I loaded up the car, and took the 30 minute ride down to Providence, RI for the 4th Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire!

During the faire, I had chance to explain the concept of the mystery box, and the rooster call it kept making.  The younger and artistic audience really like the concept of a digital rooster, and the engineers truly appreciated the technical hurdles or the DIY perpetually-powered wireless environmental study project.

At first, the customized Android Tablet, 2 deep cycle marine batteries, the Arduino, the light sensor, the temperature/ humidity sensor, the solar panels and Pelican case seemed like overkill, but once I explained our reasons for the project, a lot of makers started having their own ideas on what they’d do with something like this.

Personally, this was my first time back to the Providence Maker Faire since 2009, but it was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait for the Maker Faire in New York!

MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog Watch

Posted: 13 Aug 2012 08:55 AM PDT

HM3 POISON DART FROG FACE 2 MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog Watch

DISCLAIMER: Contrary to the name of this MB&F timepiece, making skin contact with it will not result in you being poisoned with deadly venom. That is what would happen if you started handling actual poison dart frogs (though I believe you would have to bite into a few of the safer ones to get poisoned). Which is sad, because they are really cute little creatures. I totally want to travel to South American jungles and witness first hand the petite deadly amphibians hopping around on the jungle floor.

In this case, Poison Dart Frog is the name of the latest MB&F limited edition HM3 Frog watch. While I haven’t been counting, it does seem that MB&F has been releasing a few more limited edition watches lately. The boutique brand’s growing success gives them the ability to tackle more projects. I’ve written extensively on the HM3, HM3 Frog, and related limited editions. Just search aBlogtoRead.com for my previous articles as there are too many to link to in this article However, you can peruse a hands-on piece with HM3 Frog watch here.

MBF HM3 Poison Dart Frogs MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog Watch

HM3 Poison Dart Frog movement MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog Watch

The HM3 Poison Dart Frog is influenced the small black and yellow poison dart frog with the scientific name Dendrobates Leucomelas. It is otherwise known as the yellow-banded poison dart frog, and interestingly enough is among the larger poison dart frog species out there. Still, these are really small creatures with a size no bigger than about 4cm long. I learned something interesting about the yellow-banded poison dart frog’s venom. Apparently scientists believe that it does not create the poison on its own, but rather ingests and then secrets the venom through its skin after eating certain spiders. It is unknown exactly how this works or what arachnid it eats that allows for this venom transfer. Now if only you could use a watch as a defensive mechanism like that. I am waiting for the first watch with a pepper spray function.

In honor of Dendrobates Leucomelas this HM3 Poison Dart Frog watch comes in a PVD black zirconium case with 18k gold accents in the form of case screws and the 22k gold automatic rotor. I believe the gold is rose gold based on its color, but it might be yellow gold as rose gold isn’t specified. Yellow gold would make sense as it not only matches well with black, but also fits the theme of the yell0w-banded poison dart frog.

HM3 POISON DART FROG PROFILE 2 MB&F HM3 Poison Dart Frog Watch

Aside from color changes and being a limited edition – there isn’t anything revolutionary about the HM3 Poison Dart Frog. It is another way to enjoy the great looking HM3 Frog, which remains such an iconic and distinct MB&F timepiece design. MB&F likes to point out that unlike the actual yellow-banded poison dart frog which is mostly found in Venezuela, this watch will only be found in Singapore. I did a cursory check of frog species in Singapore and didn’t find any whose coloration patterns would lend themselves well to a luxury watch. MB&F’s local authorized retailer, The Hour Glass, will be the sole place you can pick up an HM3 Poison Dart Frog watch. MB&F has limited the production to just ten pieces and they will be priced by The Hour Glass at 129,400 Singapore dollars each.
