Good eReader Week in Review – August 5th to 10th

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 02:13 PM PDT

class="aligncenter" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/week-in-review11.png" alt="goodereader week in review" />

During the last week no new e-readers have dropped but rumors continue to swirl about the new line of Amazon Kindle Tablets and e-Readers hitting the market. Sony also intends  on releasing a followup to their Sony PRS-T1 in the next few weeks and Blackberry released the Playbook 2! In our Week in Review we focus on only the MAJOR news items that you might have missed but need to know about!

Amazon eBook sales of overtaken Print in the UK – In the United Kingdom Amazon, Kobo, Sony and other major companies have used the country as a launch point to enter the rest of Europe. Many companies have partnered with literary staples such as Waterstones and WH Smith to further increase their footprint and market e-readers directly at consumers.  According to unaudited figures issued by Amazon earlier in the week, since the start of 2012 customers downloaded 114 ebooks for every 100 hardback and paperback book sold on its site. Amazon said the figures included sales of printed books, which did not have Kindle editions, but excluded free ebooks. Amazon reported that "As soon as we started selling Kindles it became our bestselling product on Amazon.co.uk so there was a very quick adoption … [And they] are buying four times more books prior to owning a Kindle," an Amazon spokeswoman said. "Generally there seems to be… a love of a reading and a renaissance as a result of Kindle being launched."

Barnes and Noble’s Legal Team Speaks to Good e-Reader – The senior legal team at Barnes and Noble took the time last week to speak with our own Mercy Pilkington. The company wanted to make public some very interesting aspects of the whole Justice Department vs. Apple and the top six publishers.  They told us that they are getting ready to file a motion in court to appeal the settlement of Simon&Schuster, Hachette, and HarperCollins. The essence of the motion was based the wording of these companies settling out of court and the expiration of the “Agency Model” of eBook Pricing that happened in July. Barnes and Noble is appealing the entire settlement and should they lose, the company would need to renegotiate eBook prices with ALL of those publishers to absolve the agency pricing and get new contracts for wholesale.

Other Amazon News – Amazon has been in the news plenty this week with major new initiatives starting. The company has formed their own Game Development Studio and their first release was a casual Facebook Game. They are hiring Android developers to start pumping out original content to be sold or given away for free in the Amazon App Market.   The company has also rolled out their physical textbook rental program, which is an elaboration on their digital strategy. Students can rent tangible textbooks for an entire semester and also pay a bit more to rent it for a longer period. You can save up to 80% on the purchase of the books, just by renting them. It is USA only at this point and likely will never reach other countries. Finally, Amazon has slashed the prices of their entire Kindle line of e-Readers to make room for new models coming out later this month.

Sony News – Sony has Discontinued their entire line of PRS-T1 Accessories and the e-reader itself.  There is plenty of deals to be had on the remaining stock of lighted e-Reader Cases and normal cases from the main Sony Website and some retail partners. Most of the accessories are not compatible with the new Sony PRS-T2 model being released this month.  Speaking of the new model, we have finally got the entire hardware details regarding the new e-reader. The Sony PRS-T2 features a six inch e-ink Pearl Display with a resolution of 600×800 pixels. It will utilize Clear Touch Infrared Technology, which will offer you pin-point procession in interacting with the screen. There is 1.3 GB of internal memory and a MicroSD to further enhance it up to 32 GB. The battery will last around two months of constant use and even comes with a free Harry Potter Book.  The design of the hardware gives you an Android Approach to e-readers with a few major buttons to bring up the homescreen, back and access to the settings menu.  You can pre-order this today at Shop e-Readers.

Blackberry Playbook LTE Released – RIM has finally released the new LTE/4G version of the Blackberry Playbook exclusively in Canada. The new model has an upgraded 1.5 GHZ processor and comes with 32 GB of internal memory. The main selling point is that this model is one of the few out there that give you full data connectivity while on the go. There is honestly only 5 tablets really out there worth your time that give you mobile data on high speeds. We did a great comparison on all of the different models that you might want to check out HERE. Although it is only available in Canada, you can order it internationally from Shop e-Readers.

eBook Authors mount a Crusade against LendINK – When it comes to writing eBooks and self-publishing, some authors really are tech savvy and can figure out how to use tools to format your book correctly and even make your own cover art. There is a large demographic that simply don’t know whats going on and rely on 3rd parties to help out. A cadre of authors thought that eBook Lending Website LendInk was pirating their eBooks, when it only helped facilitate the lending process that the authors had opted in for, when they uploaded their books for sale on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.  This has sparked a war that resulted in Authors sending hate mail to the companies ISP, Facebook and other companies. Lendink was shut down due to the sheer number of crusaders that sought to smite an innocent start-up.  Since the uninformed authors had taken to Twitter, Facebook and other public arenas the Lendink supporters have started to leave ‘one star’ reviews on the authors books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. They also have started to leave a number of negative comments about the integrity of the book, to hopefully decrease the authors sales. This was the spark that lite the fuse between two very different types of authors, and is creating bedlam. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Lenovo to Launch ThinkPad Tablet 2 Running Windows 8 Pro This October

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 07:54 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46760" title="thinkpad" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/thinkpad1.jpg" alt="" width="510" height="337" />

We are aware of Lenovo being in the process of developing a Windows 8 device named ThinkPad Tablet 2, which would be aimed at the business community. Now we have some hard facts that present us with a clearer picture of the upcoming device.

To begin with, the 10 inch tablet will be debuted towards the end of October, since Microsoft has announced the launch of Windows 8 on the 26th of October. For Lenovo, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 will act as a replacement for the present ThinkPad tablet, which runs on Android.

However, while ThinkPad Tablet 2 will also have a 10 inch display, the new tablet will be a lot different from the one it replaces. It includes a complete change of heart as the new ThinkPad will be powered by an Intel Clove Trail chip and will run Windows 8 Pro. Also, with an Intel chip on-board, the new ThinkPad will be backward compatible with existing Windows programs. This will ensure the tablet will fit into the existing computing scene in a business or home environment without causing any major conflicts.

The tablet will have a 10 inch 1366 x 768 pixel display and will include a camera along the front (2 megapixel) and back (8 megapixel). The tablet will be both 3G and 4G compliant and will come with a battery pack which Lenovo claims will be able to run for 10 hours. Among other features worth mentioning is a microHDMI port for connecting to an external display if required and a full sized USB port. The upcoming ThinkPad has also been provided with a few features that should appeal to the business community. These include an integrated fingerprint scanner along with an optional active digitizer, which means one can also use a digital pen instead of fingers. The tablet will also come pre-installed with IT management software that will enable users to deploy applications remotely or prevent other users from installing any particular application.

As for weight and dimension, the ThinkPad 2 weighs just 1.3 pounds and is just 0.4 inches in thickness.

Lenovo though is yet to come clean on the pricing details. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 will be up against the Surface Pro along with the glut of Android tablets and pricing can be decisive here if it wishes to be really successful.

BiblioCrunch’s MeetUp for Self-Publishing

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 04:44 AM PDT

class="aligncenter" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Screen_Shot_2012-02-24_at_6.32.50_PM.png" alt="bibliocrunch" />

BiblioCrunch, who launched earlier this year as a way for indie authors to let those in the industry bid on their projects for cover designing, editing, formatting, and more, has arranged a series of MeetUp events for everyone connected to the industry. The first of these events was held last week in New York, and had a specific focus on the need for editing with guest speakers Betty Kelly Sargent and Alison Brower.

"We had a fantastic event of over 35 engaged attendees," said Miral Sattar, founder of BiblioCrunch, to GoodeReader. "Most of them were authors, the next group was publishing consultants and startups who serviced these authors. A lot of the authors in the audience had finished manuscripts and were trying to make the decision between self-publishing and going the traditional route. All in all it just showed that more and more authors are looking for information on how to self-publish and are considering doing so."

Within two weeks of creating the MeetUp online, Sattar's effort had more than two hundred members. While this first event took place in New York, Sattar is already considering the requests of several members of the MeetUp group for virtual gatherings, if a suitable online platform can be found. The focus for the live events and any virtual events is on maintaining the personal connections that are still vital in the publishing industry, regardless of the format the authors choose to take.

"Personal connection is so important. I make sure I've Skyped or gone through FaceTime with a person before I ever hire someone [for BiblioCrunch]. I don't stop at picking up the phone. If it's a designer, an app developer, anybody, I have to see them, even if we can't physically meet. And that's important for authors, too." />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Hublot King Power Diego Maradona Limited Edition Watch Hands-On

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 03:09 AM PDT

Hublot King Power Maradona 7 Hublot King Power Diego Maradona Limited Edition Watch Hands On

Hublot debuted this watch in Shanghai during a public charity event where Mr. Maradona himself kicked a soccer ball to raise money for kids. If only it was that simple. Why the legendary Argentinian soccer (ahem, I mean “football”) player went to China for Hublot and his own watch is probably an amusing story. Suffice it to say that Diego Maradona fans in Argentina and abroad can appreciate his newest limited edition watch.

I believe this is the second limited edition Maradona watch that Hublot has created for Diego. He is also a Hublot brand ambassador. In addition to being famous for his soccer skills, Maradona is known to most always wear a watch on each wrist. This trend more than likely started before he was associated with any watch brand. Now he sports dual Hublots.

Hublot King Power Maradona 1 Hublot King Power Diego Maradona Limited Edition Watch Hands On

The newest limited edition watch is called the Hublot King Power Maradona Limited Edition – and is a really handsome piece. While there is distinct “Maradona branding” on the watch, you don’t need to be a big fan to enjoy the piece. There are actually two versions. In addition to this black, white, and blue model in ceramic, there is an 18k King gold cased model as well. The King Power style case is 48mm wide and the matte black ceramic case looks quite nice against the skeletonzied dial. I really like the hints of sky blue and the different color chronograph pushers.

Diego’s signature and number 10 are on the dial, while an image of his famous victory pose is placed on the rear of the watch. While the branding might be excessive by some standards, it really helps the watch have a specific theme. Hublot is able to make it fun and interesting rather than cheesy – and that is a fine line to draw when designing watches like this.

Inside the watch is a caliber HUB4245 automatic chronograph movement. It features a skeletonized dial and special central 45 minute chronograph counter – to measure soccer games of course. The rubber strap is special with a white strip down the middle. It looks great on the wrist by the way. Really a nice piece with the colors and fun soccer theme. Now you too can be like the “hand of god”. Just make sure to wear one on each wrist. The King Power Diego Maradona watches are limited to 500 pieces in ceramic, and 200 pieces in 18k King gold.

Inverted Illumination

Posted: 11 Aug 2012 01:34 AM PDT

Unlike most desk lamp designs with shades that open in the direction of the light, the Flower Barb features a combination of sleek plates that extend backward from the apex. At the center point is a focused LED that’s perfect for working under. The result is a sort of floral aesthetic with a surprising, directional light; however, I’d love to see the 4 plates able to be adjusted in the opposite direction so the user can switch between ambient glow and focused light.
