Karbonn SmartTab 1 Is The Cheapest Jelly Bean Tablet

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 06:40 PM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46289" title="karbonn smartTab" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/karbonn-smartTab.jpg" alt="" width="350" height="223" />

If you thought the cheapest (and perhaps the only) tablet running Android Jelly Bean right now is the Google Nexus 7, well you are in for a nice little surprise. For the title belongs to SmartTab 1 which has now hit store shelves in India and comes pre-loaded with the latest Android version. What’s more, all existing owners of the SmartTab 1 will be provided with the Jelly Bean update soon, possibly on the 2nd of August itself. That is all good news though the real surprise is the tablet’s price, which at ₹6,999 translates to around 5.

However, price might be the only advantage that the SmartTab 1 enjoys over its more illustrous Google offering. This since the SmartTab 1 is powered by a rather lok key 1.2GHz single core MIPS processor while the Neus 7 does with a quad core Tegra 3 chipset. The SmartTab 1 will also have a slightly less capable battery unit rated at 3700mAh which its makers claim will allow for 7-8 hours of operation. Compare this to the 4325mAh that powers the Nexus 7.

The SmartTab 1 though is still expected to appeal to the budget tablet seekers and can be enough for light work.

50 Shades of Grey outsells Harry Potter in the UK

Harry Potter rose to fame  in the United Kingdom and author J.K. Rowling became a media darling in the UK before she took over the world. Author E.L. James has usurped her position on Amazon.UK and for the first time has outsold the entire Harry Potter written franchise.

The first book in the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy went on sale in March 2012 and has become a worldwide sensation this year.  Over four million books were sold in both print and digital and is killing Harry Potter at a 2:1 rate.

Gordon Willoughby, EU director of Kindle, said: "In just four months, EL James has become Amazon.co.uk's biggest selling author of all time which is truly remarkable when you consider that we've been selling books for almost 14 years." />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Sneak Peak at Amazons Top Book List for Fall 2012

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 03:30 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-46300 aligncenter" title="Kindle 3 DX Graphite" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Kindle-3-DX-Graphite.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="281" />

National Book Lovers Day is quickly approaching on August 9th and there is no better reason to curl up with your Kindle! In preparation for the event we are giving you a sneak peak at the best books of the year (so far) and the recently released top picks for the upcoming fall season, hand-selected by Amazon's books editors.

Reading electronic books is on the rise according to a survey conducted in February. It mentioned that  21% of adults said they had read a e-book in the last year, compared to 17% who reported doing so in December. This tracked with a major spike in ownership of e-reader devices that occurred during the holiday gift-giving season in December. During that period, ownership of an e-book reader or a tablet each increased to 19% of adults, compared to 10% for each device in mid-December.

style="text-decoration: underline;">Big Fall Books Preview

  • "Telegraph Avenue" by Michael Chabon: The beloved author of "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" returns with a knowing story of life in politically correct northern California.
  • "America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't" by Stephen Colbert: According to the author and TV phenomenon, this one might "singlebookedly pull this country back from the brink."
  • "The Twelve (Book Two of The Passage Trilogy)" by Justin Cronin: In a world ravaged by the vampire apocalypse that spread in "The Passage," survivors band together to eradicate the origins of the virus.
  • "Winter of the World: Book Two of the Century Trilogy" by Ken Follett: The follow-up to "Fall of Giants" is a doorstop of a tale of World War II and the nuclear age.
  • "Flight Behavior" by Barbara Kingsolver: Global warming has never been so fascinating—or beautiful—as in this novel by the renowned author of "The Poisonwood Bible."
  • "The Casual Vacancy" by J.K. Rowling: The very definition of "highly anticipated," this blackly comic tale of a town in trouble is the Harry Potter creator's first book expressly for adults.
  • "Joseph Anton: A Memoir" by Salman Rushdie: From the celebrated novelist, the true-life tale of hiding for his life.
  • "NW" by Zadie Smith: A characteristically brilliant comic novel about four young people making their way in complicated London.
  • "The Oath: The Obama White House v. the Supreme Court" by Jeffrey Toobin: A surprising look at how two branches of government do—and don't—get along.
  • "Back to Blood" by Tom Wolfe: Think "Bonfire of the Vanities" goes to Miami. Class, race, politics. It's all there—in Wolfe's typically audacious style.

The Hunger Table

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 01:59 PM PDT

Every year 15 million children die of hunger. 925 million people are malnourished. Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger. These are just a few of the facts that inspired this thoughtful design, the Hunger Table. The multi-wood, pie chart table top represents these statistics so that those dining on it will be mindful of others starving around the world. It’s a tangible reminder of an easily overlooked problem and a great example of bringing awareness in a clever and impacting way.

Added configuration options for MacBook Pro with Retina display let you max out the base model

Added configuration options for MacBook Pro with Retina display let you max out the base model

,199 for the basic MacBook Pro with Retina display is certainly a lot to pay for any laptop, but those looking to add a few more features without going all the way up to the next model so far haven’t had a lot of options. That now looks like it’s changing, though, with configuration choices for processor and storage now showing up on Apple’s online store in addition to the existing one to double the memory — letting you, for instance, bump up the processor without also jumping to a larger SSD (or vice versa, although adding the larger SSD puts things just 0 shy of the higher end model that also comes with a faster processor). Those options aren’t quite a sure thing just yet, though, as they’ve appeared and disappeared from the site a few times this morning. We’ll keep you posted if they stick.

Update: It appears things have finally settled down, and the added options have stuck for good.

John Carmack-endorsed Oculus Rift VR project hits Kickstarter, developer kits start at $300 (update: $250k goal met)

John Carmack's Oculus Rift VR project hits kickstarter, developer kits start at 0

We heard late last month that the John Carmack-endorsed Oculus Rift VR headset would be hitting Kickstarter any day now, and it turns out today is that day. The project has just launched on the crowd-funding site with a goal of 0,000. To reach that, the team (led by company founder Palmer Lucky) is offering a variety pledge options, starting with posters and t-shirts for and (or for a simple thanks), and of course the headset itself that is initially only being offered as a developer kit. It will set you back 0, which also includes a copy of Doom 3 BFG, and is expected to start shipping in December (signed kits and a complete bundle are available as well). Those that act fast can also snag one of 100 unassembled prototype kits, which run 5 and ship a month earlier in November. Despite that developer-only status, though, the project is already off to an impressive start — it’s raised over ,000 as of this writing. You can find the usual video overview of the project after the break.

Update: The 100 prototype kits are now sold out, and the project itself has already sailed past the 0,000 0,000 mark. John Carmack also clarified on Twitter that he’s not “backing” the project in any official capacity, only endorsing it as a “wonderful advancement in VR tech.”

Update 2: And the project now easily met its goal on the first day. Those interested are still able to make a pledge any time over the next 30 days.

Court Documents Reveal Samsung Tablet With 11.8 Inch 2560 x 1600 Display

Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:46 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-46265" title="galaxy-tab-2-11" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/galaxy-tab-2-11.jpg" alt="" width="668" height="477" />

While the Samsung vs Apple court battle has entered a whole new aspect, some interesting details have spilled over into the open. From the documents that Samsung has submitted at the court in California in support of its viewpoint, what has emerged is that the South Korean company is involved in making a new tablet dubbed the “P10″. From the documents it appears to sport a 11.8 inch display having a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels (WQXGA). That is stunning to say the least and would make for a 256 ppi display, missing the Apple iPad’s pixel density of 264 ppi by just a whisker. If true, the P10 would mark the first tablet to support such super high resolution. The documents also reveal the operating system to be Android though the exact version remain unspecified. For connectivity it would have 4G LTE support.

Samsung has earlier been rumored to be making such a tablet and the above revelation is in line with it. However, that does not point to anything definitive of the tablet becoming a market reality anytime soon. The upcoming IFA event at Berlin though could throw some light on the mystery device along with other relevant details. />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;
