Many people Prefer to Watch TV on their Tablets

Guess what tablet owners are up to with their tablet devices apart from playing games, checking e-mails, surfing the web, listening to music and reading e-books?  Watching TV of course!  A Viacom report labeled “Tapping into Tabletomics” reveal that 15% of USA residents use a tablet computer like iPad for viewing TV programs. The survey was carried out amongst a group of 2,500 people.

The desktop PC and smartphones have taken back seat as per the study report while tablet PCs have gone up in consumer preference for watching their favorite TV programs. The respondents however mentioned the tablet as just a secondary option to view TV programs. They yet preferred the TV set as their first choice to view TV programs owing to the bigger screens and a better sound wuality while tablet devices only played a complimentary role.

Speaking of the consumer trend, Viacom stated, “Our audiences are some of the most deeply engaged and active across social platforms. Co-viewing apps create more meaningful ways to reach them and represent an entirely new level of engagement for fans of our content.”

New Bauhn ALDI e-Reader Available Now

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 04:11 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-40306 aligncenter" title="Aldi Bauhn ereader" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/W16_022_7inch_colour_ebook_reader_and_media_player_PD.jpg" alt="" width="587" height="280" />

ALDI is releasing a new color e-reader today called the Bauhn by Effortless Technologies. It will retail for .99 and is a very low cost device that us much akin to the Book by Augen.

The new Bauhn e-reader features a seven inch TFT display with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. It has 4 GB of internal memory and a Micro SD port to further boost it up. It has a built in mono speaker to play audio and video but you will want to use the 3.5mm headphone jack ideally.

This is more a multimedia tablet than e-reader and supports a myriad audio codecs such as MP3, WMA, FLAC, and AAC. If you feel like watching videos you can import in WMV and MP4 formats. Videos on the device do not look too bad, they play both in landscape and portrait mode. Pictures also don't look too shabby, but are only really viewable in landscape mode. It does JPEG rather well. There is a built-in mono speaker and an audio jack so you can listen right from the device or via headphones. There is a menu option for audiobooks and music, and you can actually listen to music outside of the music application. This means you can surf the web and listen to tunes at the same time, or vice versa with an audiobook. You can connect up to the internet via the built in WIFI and battery life is around six hours. If you are going to buy this to read books it supports TXT, HTML, ePub, PDF, CHM, RTF, FB2, and MOBI/PRC.

Should you buy this item? Honestly it really looks like a re-branded Augen e-Reader and they went out of business last year. It runs on a Linux operating system and does not give you any flexibility to really do much with it. It only costs .99 but I think you would be better served buying a budget Android tablet for the same price. You will be able to load in your own apps and have more freedom.

Verdict – Avoid at all COSTS!! />google_ad_client=”pub-5776314496161013″;google_ad_slot=”5610832462″;google_ad_width=468;google_ad_height=60;

Kobo to Roll Out 100 Stores Within WHSmith Locations

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 01:02 PM PDT

class="size-full wp-image-40243 aligncenter" title="kobo store uk" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/kobowraparound1.gif" alt="" width="300" height="234" />

Kobo intends on rolling out 100 boutique style stores within 100 different WHSmith bookstore locations in the United Kingdom. They will be manned by dedicated Kobo employees with deep product knowledge that can help you decide what device is perfect for you. They will be selling the Kobo Vox, Kobo Touch, and various accessories for their e-readers.

The Kobo store within a store concept takes its cues from a pilot project the company had been running at a few of WHSmith’s largest locations. One of the boons on this enterprise is that all of the areas will be outfitted with WiFi and PCs and knowledgeable Kobo experts. Customers will have the chance to experience Kobo, learn about ereading, purchase the devices, browse the Kobo eBookstore, and activate their Kobo account before leaving the store.  They will also provide a bit of technical support if you have a unit that is not working properly and attempt to help you troubleshoot it.

"We value our partnership with WHSmith and are excited to have dedicated, knowledgeable staff members who will educate WHSmith customers and introduce them to the benefits of Kobo." said Mike Serbinis, CEO of Kobo. "We know that in partnership with WHSmith we will deliver an engaging in-store experience that will demonstrate our expertise, best-in-class design, easy user experience, and innovative product line."

I think this is a savvy move by Kobo that gives them a distinctive presence in the UK. Amazon currently sells its range of devices at various store locations but remains an afterthought in most shelves. Barnes and Noble has seen success with its dedicated Nook areas in most store locations, and in most cases has expanded the areas due to customer demand. With Barnes and Noble prospectively opening in the UK soon, Kobo needs to brand itself most effectively. This seems to be a move in the right direction.

id="pressrelease-content-40242" class="pressrelease-content" style="display: none;"> style="text-align: left;">LONDON, UK, April 19, 2012 – Kobo Inc., a global leader in eReading, today announced plans to open new Kobo branded shops within 100 WHSmith High Street retail locations in 2012. UNIQ M21 Watch Review

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 11:27 AM PDT

UNIQ M21 061 UNIQ M21 Watch Review

Images and text by Adam Morin

UNIQ is a small brand started by industrial and automotive designer Zviad Tsikolia. Their focus is to design affordable watches based on historically significant vehicles. While a few designs have been shown, the M21 is the first watch to be released to the public (read about the UNIQ Caterham Seven here). A limited edition of 300 pieces, the M21 is based on design elements of the Soviet GAZ M21 car which was produced in three series from 1956 to 1970. This watch was created with input from GAZ M21 expert Ivan Paderin and there are a number of notable design features from the GAZ which are used in the M21 watch.

Car and watch tie-ins are far from uncommon but more often than not are merely the addition of a logo or an element designed to look as if it were part of a car. Typically such elements end up looking like a tacked-on afterthought and not an integral part of the design. The M21 stands out because it doesn’t necessarily look like a “car watch”. UNIQ was able to select identifiable elements of the vintage car while combining them into a cohesive design which is capable of standing on its own. With no knowledge of the GAZ M21, the M21 watch would likely be seen as a good-looking watch with a retro vibe. With its modern 44mm size and color scheme, the M21 is a watch that can easily dress up or down. The flat caseback sits comfortably while the waterproof leather strap conforms nicely to the wrist. The 13.5mm thick case feels light but not cheap and doesn’t move around on the wrist. A stainless butterfly deployant clasp closes firmly and is engraved with the M21 logo.

The most obvious design element carried over from the car is the general look of the dial. It was clearly based on the dashboard clock found in the GAZ M21. This multi-layered display consists of a raised grey central disc and outer ring while the space between is black with a phonographic finish. The Arabic numerals around the outer ring are printed with SuperLuminova. The numbers at 12 are flipped to read “21″, a subtle tie in to the model number both the watch and car share. The hour marker at 12 o’clock on the inner black ring was swapped for a profile view of the GAZ 21 stag hood ornament. A date window sits in place of the 3 o’clock marker and is thinly framed in orange, the color used in the GAZ company logo. It’s a nice splash of color that is just enough to be fun without looking out of place on the otherwise monochromatic watch. UNIQ’s brand logo sits unobtrusively at 6 o’clock on the central disc. It would have been nice to see hands closer to those on the original dashboard clock but that would have likely pushed the price significantly higher. This choice is understandable given the company philosophy of affordability. The ends of the hands are also painted with SuperLuminova which help with night legibility. The hands do look a little small for the dial but that is the same on the original clock. Also like the clock, there is no second hand.

The M21′s polished bezel is one of the more unique features and contrasts nicely with the brushed 316L stainless case. Modeled after car’s chrome headlight surround, the bottom portion is steeply tapered and only slightly higher than the crystal while the upper half juts out further with less of a rake. There is some optical distortion at extreme angles from the domed sapphire crystal but this actually helps legibility as the far numerals appear to stand up somewhat. A five-point star sits at the end of the crown in reference to the grill of the Series I GAZ M21. Later models had a different grill without the star. The screw-on caseback is styled like hubcaps of the era and has the limited edition serial number engraved around the edge along with additional model information.

Inside is a quartz Ronda movement and the water resistance is rated to 50 meters. 5 might seem like a lot for a quartz watch unless you are a GAZ M21 fan but there are numerous elements unique to this watch alone. Also, given that only 300 are going to be made, you will probably never see one on the wrist of another person nor one looking similar to it. The M21 watch is available for purchase direct from UNIQ.

Kindle Touch Lands in UK a Week Early

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 11:27 AM PDT

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-40282" title="Kindle Touch" src="http://goodereaderimages.goodereader.netdna-cdn.com/blog/uploads/images/Kindle-Touch2.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="300" />

eBook lovers and Kindle fans in the UK are in for a pleasant surprise from Amazon—its Kindle Touch e-book reader is now available in the country a week ahead of schedule. Amazon had earlier set April 27 as the day to mark its entry into the UK with its Kindle 4G, but isn’t citing any reason why it chose to do it a week early. The online retailer has said it is overwhelmed at the consumer response it received for the latest generation of touchscreen based e-readers, which might have prompted it to come in early.

“Orders from customers worldwide for our new line of electronic ink Kindles have exceeded our expectations,” said Kindle EU’s vice president, Jorrit Van der Meulen.

“We know that UK customers are eager to get their hands on these new Kindles, which is why we're delighted to be able to ship several days earlier than we planned.”

On offer are both the Wi-Fi and 3G version of Kindle Touch, priced at £109 and £169 respectively. The Kindle Touch meant for UK can be considered an enhanced version of the one on sale in the US and which costs . The UK’s Kindle Touch e-readers has a text-to-speech feature along with the ability to play back MP3 files. Further, the Kindles will enjoy a backup time of around 2 months.

Fresh orders for the Kindle Touch are being accepted at Amazon.co.uk, while the e-reader can also be picked up from retailers such as John Lewis, Dixons, Argos, Carphone Warehouse, Currys, PC World, Staples, Tesco, and others.

“Print” Your Dream House

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 09:52 AM PDT

Amazing advancements have been made in 3D-printing technology, but designer Sebastian Bertram has taken it a step further, expanding the capabilities of 3D printing to large-scale 3D building. The Contour aims to keep up with demand for housing in urban areas with aconstruction method that combines industrial production and the technique of rapid prototyping. The robot “prints” contours of a building shell layer by layer using fast-drying concrete. Within just a couple of weeks, an entire estate could be produced.

Finger Lock the Door

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 08:17 AM PDT

Grabit is a door handle fitted with a fingerprint scanner. The door opens only if it recognizes the fingerprint, however that's not the coolest part. What makes this design plausible and functional is the position of the scanner. It's placed at the most ergonomically viable place, making the act of opening (or locking) a door, very fluid.

I’m not usually into super-compact cars but there’s no denying the draw to this unique beauty. The EXO concept is the result of a challenge to designers Mark Beccaloni & Mauro Fragiotta to create a minimal and compact yet realistically usable urban vehicle. Designed from the outside in, the external geodesic shape is not only aesthetically captivating, but provides serious strength to the structure.

My Orange Squeeze

Posted: 20 Apr 2012 05:07 AM PDT

I really don't see the point in an electric citrus fruit squeezer. I own one and end up putting in manual labor to hold the orange in place with firm grip. I may as well invest in a classy juicer like the Edwin; it is sustainable and made from smooth ceramic and wood. Squeezing the fruit will give my fingers good exercise and no more worrying about repairs! Unless I get clumsy and break the ceramic component, I guess I'm all set.
